The man accused of unleashing “terrifying carnage” in a stabbing rampage in the busy Sydney CBD was a “lone actor” who carried information related to terrorism ideology during the attack, police have said.


The 21-year-old man, who is in hospital under police custody after this afternoon's attack, has been named by multiple media outlets as Mert Ney of Marayong near Blacktown in Sydney’s west.


He is expected to be charged over the incident, which left one woman dead and another injured.


NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller described the man as a “lone actor” and said early inquiries found he may have held some concerning ideologies, but the incident was not terror related.


“Information was found on him that would suggest he had some ideologies related to terrorism, but he has no links to terrorism … he has no apparent links to terror organisations,” Mr Fuller said.
