Starving mobs of kangaroos raiding Australian capital Canberra for food

The Australian city of Canberra has been overtaken by thousands of hungry kangaroos, who are raiding any patch of green grass they can find.

Scores have been spotted by residents dealing with the sudden influx of the "mob" - the term for a large group of kangaroos.

The capital city has more than 30 nature reserves, most of which are home to eastern grey kangaroos.

However, a dry and harsh winter has forced the animals out of their bush habitats and into the main city in search of food.

Park rangers have been called to a record number of crashes in the suburbs involving the bouncing marsupials, according to a report by The Canberra Times.

There have already been 2,291 incidents so far this year - compared with 2,634 in the whole of 2017.

"The way we're tracking, it's likely we're going to have more than 4,000 kangaroo incidents by the time the year is done," Daniel Iglesias, director of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Parks and Conservation Service, told the newspaper.

It was about this time last year, I drove from Sydney to Cooma via Canberra.

I reckon smash repairs must do a booming business along the road between Canberra and Cooma. I've never before seen so much road kill lying by the highway.
Quite a few were bloody big roos as well.
Would make a mess of the front of your car.

Last year I suggested a competition to guess what she's saying.
I think it's "Fuck off, piss off".

Are there any rules wrt reporting if you smash a roo? If you accidentally killed a platypus or echidna, you're obliged to report it, I think...what about roos?

^ Roo's are pests you could kill a million of them and you wouldn't notice the difference.

No shortage of 50+ million Roo population estimates these days, 10 or 20 million could get culled and you still wouldn't notice the difference. Send the meat to 3rd world shitholes who always have their hand out for cash to feed themselves and buy Bentleys for their leaders, 2 birds 1 stone...

I asked because I visited my mum in Queensland year before last. She gets roos in her front and back garden quite a lot. I asked the neighbour if one can shoot them, and she said technically, no, but if they were a menace nobody would complain too much. It gave me the impression that despite planned culls now and then, they were still a native species and may have some sort of protection status.

    It's a good idea.
I wonder if Thais would take to eating them. Get an import license, become a meat baron
Come to that.... Lil' Aye's Roo and Mushroom pies at only B50 because the meat is so cheap!!! Or Roo massaman.
LT, you can thank me later with a dozen Aussie beef pies and 2 dozen roo pies.

I've hit a few Roos in the Outback.

If anyone knows QLD, on the road from Goondiwindi to StGeorge.

Just after Sundown is the worst time. They usually come down for a 'pick' in the shallows either side of the sealed road.
Worst when it's dry because that channel near the road is the last bit of green grass.

    ---

Australia used export roo meat to Russia before they banned the import.

Readily available in any TESCO (Wollies/Coles) in Australia.

Also, there is a real difference between a Wallaby and a Roo.

Wallaby are relatively common round populated areas.

Roos are much larger and I wouldn't like to shirtfront one.

When they end up as road kill, after a couple of weeks in the baking outback Sun, they don't half stink.
Even with the air-con on and recycled air, the smell still permeates the cabin.

The smaller ones you drive over and try not to hit the body with the bell end of the cars diff.
    Makes a dull thud.

    EDIT ... damm dry ATM
