Nevada becomes fifth US state to allow cannabis sales for recreational purposes

The millions of tourists who visit Las Vegas and other Nevada cities every year are expected to make nearly two of every three purchases

Nevada has become the fifth state in the US with stores selling marijuana for recreational purposes.

People aged 21 and above can now buy up to an ounce of the drug at a time and use it in their homes if they have a valid ID in the western state, which is famed for the hotels and casinos in its largest city Las Vegas.

The millions of tourists who visit Nevada cities every year are expected to make nearly two of every three purchases from retailers, who began selling pot early on Saturday morning.

Hundreds of people lined up at Essence Cannabis Dispensary on the Las Vegas Strip and cheered as the doors opened just after midnight.

Dispensaries worked furiously to prepare for the launch, stamping labels on pot products, stocking up their shelves, adding security and checkout stations, and announcing specials.

Desert Grown Farms hired about 60 additional employees. Workers in scrubs, hair nets and surgical masks slapped stickers on sealed jars this week as others checked on marijuana plants or carefully weighed buds.

"It would be a good problem to have if I couldn't meet my demand," said CEO Armen Yemenidjian, whose Desert Grown Farms owns the only dispensary that is selling recreational pot on the Las Vegas Strip, across the street from the Stratosphere hotel.

Some dispensaries took to social media to spread the word or tried to draw in buyers with special events. Some planned to give away free marijuana to their first 100 customers or throw parties with barbecues and food trucks later in the afternoon.

Some facilities are in strip malls, while others, in stereotypical Las Vegas fashion, are in neighborhoods shared by strip clubs.

Voters approved legalisation eight months ago, making this the fastest turnaround from the ballot box to sales in the US.

Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Alaska also allow adults to buy marijuana, which is still banned by the federal government.

Marijuana smokers will still face fines of up to $600 if they light up in public places, including casinos, bars, restaurants, parks, and concert halls, and driving under the influence of the drug remains illegal.

Here's a look at what's expected from legal marijuana:

    WHERE CAN PEOPLE LIGHT UP?

Only in a private home, including yards and porches. While it may be legal to stroll down parts of the Las Vegas Strip with your favorite adult beverage, the same doesn't apply to pot. It's prohibited in casinos, bars, restaurants, parks, concerts and on U.S. property, from national forests to federally subsidized housing.

While anyone who is 21 with a valid ID can buy up to an ounce of pot or one-eighth of an ounce of edibles or concentrates, using it in public can get lead to a $600 ticket for a first offense.

    WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?

Industry experts predict Nevada's market will be the nation's biggest, at least until California plans to begin recreational sales in January.

Nevada sales should eventually exceed those in Colorado, Oregon and Washington state because of the more than 42 million tourists who annually visit Las Vegas. Regulators anticipate 63 percent of customers will be tourists.

    A good move, IMO.

Possession of ONLY 1 pot seed was a felony not long ago.

    Insane.

Long lines in Nevada as recreational marijuana goes on sale

(CNN)Fireworks, long lines and even a wedding marked the start of recreational marijuana sales in Nevada.

At midnight Saturday, legal pot went on sale -- making Nevada the eighth state to allow the purchase of marijuana in dispensaries.

Nevada's law lets adults 21 and older to possess up to an ounce of marijuana. The law was approved by voters in November 2016.

But due to federal marijuana laws and state casino laws, dispensaries cannot be located on the famous Las Vegas Strip.

Fireworks ring in the new law

Hundreds of people waited for hours in lines to make their first legal weed buy. Show rooms were packed and ATM's were emptied for cash only sales. Green fireworks lit the night sky.

State Sen. Tick Segerblom was one of the first to make a purchase. He's considered the "godfather of the marijuana movement" in Nevada.

"Every time you buy something here, 33-cents is going to taxes. This is the most heavily taxed and regulated industry in the whole state," Segerblom told CNN affiliate KSNV.
Marijuana is expected to generate $60 million in tax revenue the next two years.

    A green wedding

Las Vegas is known for its quirky wedding chapels, so one couple marked the day by getting hitched in a giant marijuana greenhouse.

Anna, the bride, carried a bouquet of weed leaves and Mark Balfe-Taylor, the groom, had a giant bud tucked into his coat pocket.

Anna and Mark Balfe-Taylor celebrated the sale of recreational marijuana in Nevada by getting married at a Las Vegas cultivation facility
"I feel good ... somewhat lost for words," Mark said.

I'm shocked I got a receipt for marijuana."

For some buyers, the day was a bit of relief.

Nathaniel White told KSNV that he had experienced trouble with the police for past marijuana possession but today said "just the receipt is amazing. I'm shocked I got a receipt for marijuana."

Though possession of a small amount of pot is legal, consumption of marijuana in Nevada is for private use only, limited to homes.

Marijuana is prohibited in casinos, bars, restaurants, parks, concerts and on any federal property.

There's a $600 fine for smoking in public.

Naa, prostitution is illegal in Clarke Country where La Vegas is, the ho houses are about 70 miles out in the desert in a shithole called Pahrump, in Nye County.

Should be good for the gaming industry having stoned players.....they do their best now to get alcohol into you while you're playing.

Well Bob it must have been some years since you were in Sin City, if you've ever been there at all. You can't walk down the Strip without getting a fistful of contact numbers

No, there's actually a slim chance of it being decriminalised.
The notion has been tabled in government, last year I think.

It won't take long before they realise the hordes of tourists that would flock here if having a toke was as easy as having a beer.
If they don't do it soon, the novelty will not be available as more and more countries legalise or decriminalise it.

There's a bar near me where you can order a beer and a spliff, and partake of both on the premises. Non-tourist place but expat teachers go there all the time.
Has a great in-house band too.

First days of recreational marijuana sales generate about $500,000 in taxes

Customers wait in a long line at Reef Dispensaries beside food trucks as recreational sales of marijuana begin at Midnight in Nevada and dispensaries across Las Vegas are open too on Friday, June 30, 2017.

The first four days of legal recreational marijuana sales generated $3 million in sales revenue and about $500,000 in tax revenue, putting Nevada on pace to achieve an estimated $30 million in sales revenue over the next six months of recreational sales, according to the Nevada Dispensary Association.

The sales figure was generated from Saturday’s first day of recreational marijuana sales to Tuesday. The tax rate for recreational pot is 33 to 38 percent, depending on local regulations, with all state and local taxes included.

“We had a higher demand than everybody initially thought,” dispensary association director Riana Durrett said. “It shows this market really exists.”

Thousands of marijuana shoppers took to dispensaries over the weekend, forming lines as long as three hours for their chance to legally purchase the plant. Nevadans passed Ballot Question 2 in November, legalizing the use and possession of up to one ounce of marijuana flower or up to one-eighth ounce of concentrates. Legislation allowing sales of the plant at medically licensed dispensaries was finalized in late May.

Nevada was one of four states to legalize recreational use of the plant in November’s election. In addition, four other states allow recreational pot sales.

Editor’s note: This story has been revised. An earlier version contained an incorrect figure on the amount of tax revenue that has been generated.

That doesn't make it legal and the American cops have nothing better to do than use decoys to catch prostitution customers. In other words you're taking a chance. There have been several stories about decoy operations in the media over the last few years, and the entrapment defense does not work or apply if the cops/prosecutor can show you were predisposed to commit the "crime."

Also, my right hand does not have a shitty American woman attitude, is not addicted to crack, has no diseases and does not require a condom.

Reefer madness. Big companies back then did not want to compete with the many products that could have been made with hemp. Dupont Chemical played a big role in making it illegal.

Now it seems Nevada has a problem. The shops are running out of product. Urgently sourcing more.
