Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Friday urged the United Nations Security Council to impose new economic sanctions on North Korea, warning of a "catastrophic" outcome if the world fails to block Pyongyang's rush to develop a nuclear warhead that it can put atop a long-range missile.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Thursday Washington has no intention for a regime change or invasion of North Korea, urging it to abandon its nuclear program in return for regime security and an end to hostility, according to Seoul’s special envoys.

Tillerson made the remarks during his meeting with Hong Seok-hyun, a former chairman of JoongAng Media Network who is visiting Washington as President Moon Jae-in’s special envoy.

North Korea fires missile near Pyongyang, South Korea's military says

North Korea has fired a missile from an area near its capital, Pyongyang, South Korea's military says, in the latest weapons test for a
country speeding up its nuclear weapons and missile development.

South Korea said the missile flew about 500 kilometres and was believed to have landed in waters off the North's east coast.

It took off Sunday afternoon from a location near Pukchang, an area where Pyongyang attempted to test-launch another missile last month but
failed, South Korea's Office of Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

A South Korean military official did not give further details, but said the military was analysing the launch.

Missile had 'shorter range' than previous tests

The White House said it was aware of the latest launch, and identified the projectile as a medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM).
"We are aware that North Korea launched an MRBM. This system, last tested in February, has a shorter range than
the missiles launched in North Korea's three most recent tests," a White House official said.

North Korea launches unidentified projectile off coast, South Korean military says

North Korea has fired an unidentified projectile off its east coast, South Korea's military said, in what is likely the latest
test-launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The statement by the Joint Chiefs of Staff early Monday morning did not say what type of projectile was fired or if it was successful.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency, without citing a source, said the projectile is believed to be a ballistic missile, but the South Korean military said it was still analysing what exactly the North launched.

US authorities tracked the six-minute flight until it crashed into the Sea of Japan, the US Pacific Command said.

The United States military has successfully staged its first-ever missile defence test involving a simulated attack by an
intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), as concerns mount over North Korea's advancing missile and nuclear program.

"This system is vitally important to the defence of our homeland, and this test demonstrates that we have a capable,
credible deterrent against a very real threat," Vice Admiral Jim Syring, the director of the Missile Defence Agency, said in a statement.

The Missile Defence Agency said the test involved launching a simulated ICBM from a test site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands toward the US.

US forces — using data from satellites and radar — then fired a Ground-based Midcourse Defence (GMD) interceptor
from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California to strike it down.

North Korea is only a threat because they are being threatened and attacked and believe they need missiles and nukes to defend themselves against the threats and attacks by sanction.

The only way to remove any threat is by friendship and trade and showing them that there is no threat against them.

It is probably to late for this now as it should have been started back in 1953 after they were pushed out of the south but the US were the conquering heroes back then and needed for their own vanity to keep their foot firmly on the north.

They have now seen what the US has done to other countries from Vietnam to Syria in the present day mostly brought on by some sort of superior self proclaimed policeman bullshit like stopping the spread of communism or by outright manufactured lies.

They know that the US has no respect for others or for the UN which they will use or ignore as it suits them and know that they can not be trusted so even if there was today a policy of befriending and trading with North Korea put in place it would take generations to break down the longstanding hate and mistrust.

Attacking North Korea by sanctions has not worked and attacking them militarily would bring utter devastation not only to the north but also to the south for as well as possible nukes the north has hundreds of artillery pieces lined up along the DMZ which can reach Seoul and beyond and may have missiles which could reach Japan which they would not hesitate to use would should the US decide to bomb them. As well as that they have a 2 million man armed force with another 2 million reservists who would flood into the south.

But what are the lives of a few (hundred) million slit eyes when the US can stand back and fire missiles from a distance and bomb from drones with no risk to themselves as long as they cant reach the US.

It's never to late. There is always a time when an apology will be accepted. A single Korea, a denuclerised penisular and the move away of ameristani armed forces would be a great start.

If ameristan would move on from their post WWII approach they would find possibly a more attractive world. They of course would have to work for a change and that may come as a shock to their citizens, as the world has moved on.

Well Mr Cow you usually post some good stuff but in this instance you are somewhat out of line although you do have the " nasty American fascists " right.

North Korea today is a product of the policies towards it since WW11 and after the Korean war. You probably know there has never been a peace deal signed between the north and south so technically they are still at war.

Before you post again read the history of Korea on Wiki and see among other things how the division came about : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_...orea_relations

Then go on and have a look at several other sites to see that there has been peace treaties proposed but they have never come to anything read for yourself why that could be: Peace Treaty: The Only Solution to the Korean Problem | World Policy Institute

https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...fication-seoul

And from North Korea itself : https://www.nknews.org/2017/03/its-t...h-north-korea/

So OhOh and I are not the only ones that see that peace will never be brought about by war and a military strike on North Korea will only bring devastation, this from people who know what they are talking about :

I normally do some research before I post on such topics and Mr Cow's post has prompted me to do some more so if anyone needs convincing that there is really no military option in North Korea read farther :

deadspin-quote-carrot-aligned-w-bgr-2<\/title><\/svg>')}.f_branding_on.blog-group-deadspin .editor-inner.post-content .pu

A snip from that one :

One of the problems with analyzing North Korea are the knee-jerk impulses to assign the label of “crazy” or unstable to its leadership. In reality, we don’t really know a lot about them. Several North Korea experts told The Washington Post as much “North Korea has consistently been treated like a joke, but now the joke has nuclear weapons,” said John Park, director of the Korea Working Group at the Harvard Kennedy School. “If you deem Kim Jong Un to be irrational, then you’re implicitly underestimating him.”
And another :

Talks have worked in the past. As I wrote recently, a framework brokered in 1994 for North Korea to freeze its nuclear program fell through because the GOP-led Congress at the time refused to fund the proliferation-resistant nuclear power reactors Washington was supposed to give Pyongyang in exchange. And former President George W. Bush’s “Axis of Evil” pronouncement didn’t help, either.

And if you want another opinion :

I am not advocating military action. Neither do I advocate taking it off the table. I don't believe Kim wants to start a war he can't win. Or give the Americans an "easy" option. To think NK would freeze its nuclear weapons program for Nuclear power technology would be foolish. Regime survival is its only goal, hence the need for nuclear weapons. A conventional war by NK could lead to thousands of defectors from the NK forces.
IMO he is playing for a lifting of sanctions to further entrench his regime and will sacrifice any amount of his own people to achieve it.
The rub is do you ease sanctions and provide aid to a murderous dictator which will ease the suffering of some of the people or try harder sanctions? The former will only increase his ability to spend more money on his repressive regime, the latter is always likely to be thwarted by China and Russia for their own self interested reasons including weakening U.S. influence in the region. Therein lies the problem.

North Korea launches ballistic missile into sea, South Korea's military says

North Korea has launched a ballistic missile into the sea, South Korea's military says.

The projectile may have landed in Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone, Japan's NHK public television said, quoting the Defence Ministry.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement the launch was made from North Korea's North Phyongan province.

The launch was immediately reported to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, according to the statement.

It was not immediately clear if this was a routine firing of a short-range missile or an attempt to perfect North Korea's longer range missiles.

The launch would be the latest in a series by North Korea since the start of the year and comes just one day after US President
Donald Trump spoke to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe about the issue.
More to come.
.
UPDATE ...
North Korea says it successfully tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting "anywhere in the world",
under the supervision of leader Kim Jong-un.

Key points:
• Initial assessments said missile was "intermediate range", but North Korea says it was intercontinental
• If proven intercontinental, would be the first
• Weapons analyst says missile could be powerful enough to reach Alaska
• Australia has condemned the launch
The Hwasong-14 missile reached an altitude of 2,802 kilometres and hit its target precisely after flying for 933km in39 minutes,
the announcement on state television said.

"The test launch was conducted at the sharpest angle possible and did not have any negative effect on neighbouring countries," the statement said.

The launch is a potential game-changing development in North Korea's push to militarily challenge the United States,
but a declaration that conflicts with earlier South Korean and US assessments that it had an intermediate range.

US, South Korean and Japanese officials said the missile was launched from an airfield in Panghyon, about 100km north-west of the North's capital, Pyongyang.
I wonder if they are any good at darts?

Have the Israeli nuclear facilities been inspected by a competent authority, you know like the inspections on Iraq and Iran?

Until then they have to be accepted as a nuclear power similar to any country which has the nuclear capacity, Japan?

One could always have some talks between the affected parties and once concluded actually carry the agreements out. Instead of tearing them up which is standard ameristani SOP.

Sanctions agreed by the SC members are being carried out by all. However ameristan as usual confuses it's own decisions with that of the SC hence the concerns of the other affected parties.

But to expect ameristan to follow agreements is like waiting for ............

Why does ameristan have so many military bases spread around the world when it already has Embassies with diplomats to deal with issues in country, what are they afraid of?

Maybe our Philippine based poster may have some points, if he has knowledge, he can share. He does appear to have been "involved" in such things, in his previous life.

The Hwasong-14 missile reached an altitude of 2,802 kilometres

So only 10 times the altitude of the International Space Station.
