Russia appears to deploy forces in Egypt, eyes on Libya role - sources

Russia appears to have deployed special forces to an airbase in western Egypt near the border with Libya in recent days, U.S., Egyptian and diplomatic sources say, a move that would add to U.S. concerns about Moscow's deepening role in Libya.

The U.S. and diplomatic officials said any such Russian deployment might be part of a bid to support Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar, who suffered a setback with an attack on March 3 by the Benghazi Defence Brigades (BDB) on oil ports controlled by his forces.

The U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the United States has observed what appeared to be Russian special operations forces and drones at Sidi Barrani, about 60 miles (100 km) from the Egypt-Libya border.

Egyptian security sources offered more detail, describing a 22-member Russian special forces unit, but declined to discuss its mission. They added that Russia also used another Egyptian base farther east in Marsa Matrouh in early February.

The apparent Russian deployments have not been previously reported.

One of Libya’s Rival Governments Asks Russia for Military Assistance

An interview in Russian state media Tuesday indicates that one of Libya’s rival governments is looking increasingly to Moscow as a patron, a move that’s concerning U.S. military commanders in the region.

Aguila Saleh, speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR), told RIA Novosti, a Kremlin-controlled news agency, that he’s asked Russia to help train Libyan National Army fighters led by General Khalifa Haftar and has invited Russian lawmakers to visit eastern Libya.

“Most of our officers were trained in Russia and many speak Russian, and they know how to use Russian equipment,” Saleh is reported as saying. He promised Libya will pay $4 billion in Gadhafi-era military debt owed to Russia and added the Kremlin has promised to help “in the fight against terrorism.”

And why not? After the relative success of Russia in stabilising Syria they may be the only force capable to clean up another US/NATO clusterfuck.

Regardless, shouldn't be the business of major/minor superpowers to meddle and attempts at imperial expansion - all of it.

The cycles continue to overlap, perpetuating the proxy conflicts everlasting.

All well and good but what about the children. RTP and all that shite.

You are also assuming they are following the Empire builders of the past's playbook.

You need to sniff the wind, things maybe ready to change.

Yes and don't forget the U.S. Special forces that where in Libya 6 years ago to help cause this country's anarchy.
Russia has to clean up the mess Cameron and Clinton orchestrated.
So let the Western media demonise Russia for being the cleanup fall guy of the West.

The Libtards and Dumbs are noticeably absent from this thread... too busy selectively cum guzzling the 'bad Russians hacked my grandma's fridge' type media bullshit.. easier to swallow than Russia is actually doing something good.

The US is doing the right thing letting Vlad waste precious resources in these shit countries. They are nothing more than a drain on US resources.

Vlad doesn't care about sending his people home in bodybags.

Let Vlad spend all the money and lives stabilising them (if they can), then cosy up later on and sideline him.

Sounds like a win-win to me.

Far too clever a policy to come from the orange-faced wanker.

    "doing something good"?

What, selling them second-rate soviet-era weapons instead of them buying US ones?

Second-rate soviet-era weapons, and tactics, work better than anything the US throws billions of dollars at, as so clearly demonstrated in Syria... or is it just that the US prefers starting wars than ending them

Half agree with you there Harry. Let someone spend their money, as long as it is not the EU or US. Better yet, back away further and let the middle east fight it out amongst themselves, then go in and pick up the pieces,

Well one thing seems assured is that we won't be having a thread on "Putins Benghazi" and lots of crazy shrilly posters going on about Benghazi.

Democratics lost the election over Benghazi.

    What a stupid question.

Compared to how unstable it was before the Russian intervention, you know when the US was "helping".

There's a pattern here, just as harry doesn't count numbers, i.e. one soldier crossing a border equals an invasion, you're the kind of fella that decides not to see cause and effect. I mean clearly Arabs don't need an excuse to fall out with each other, it's in their dna... but you have to be deeply in denial to think that the billions of dollars of weapons the US has supplied to all sides in the region, as well as supporting Israel and invading a sovereign nation, hasn't helped create the total clusterfuck that the middle east is today.

But yeah... just back off, let someone else clear all that shit up

Yeah, and everything is nice and calm and warm and fuzzy now, right?

I think there are many Syrians who would strongly disagree with you Neo.

I am not denying anything. In your deep hate for anything US, you just glaze over anything said that might actually make some sense like Harry's statement.
