Suspected Russian Hacker Indicted in US

The Russian national who was accused by American officials of hacking U.S. targets and arrested earlier this month in the Czech capital was indicted by a federal grand jury in the state of California, U.S. officials said Friday.

Yevgeniy Nikulin, 29, of Moscow was arrested October 5 by officials in Prague, where he remains in custody, according to a statement issued by the U.S. Department of Justice.

In the indictment, filed Thursday, Nikulin was charged with computer intrusion and identity theft.

Czech authorities this week said the suspect was detained in downtown Prague in response to an Interpol warrant issued at the request of the United States, and he now faces a Czech extradition hearing, according to RFE/RL's Current Time TV.

Hours after news emerged of Nikulin's arrest, the professional networking service LinkedIn issued a statement suggesting the development was connected to a 2012 breach of its members' information. In May, LinkedIn acknowledged that intrusion compromised more than 100 million of its users' passwords.

No date has been set for Nikulin's extradition hearing, but Czech authorities said the man would remain in custody until that process.

The Russian Embassy in Prague told Current Time that Moscow will be seeking his return to Russia. Moscow, an embassy source said, rejects "the U.S. practice of forcing the entire world to enforce its extraterritorial jurisdiction."

Interpol had issued a so-called Red Notice for the alleged Russian hacker, a designation for "wanted international fugitives."

Current Time's investigation uncovered Nikulin's Instagram account under the handle "i.tak.soidet," displaying a taste for luxury cars and jewelry and a digital trail that led through Belarus and Poland to the Czech Republic during the weeks before he was arrested.

The Instagram account went private shortly after Current Time's Russian-language report was published October 20. Soon after that, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed Nikulin’s identity for journalists in Moscow.

"The Russian Foreign Ministry and the Russian Embassy in Prague are actively working with the Czech authorities to prevent the extradition of a Russian citizen to the United States," she added.

The detention of Nikulin shows Washington is mounting a global manhunt against Russian citizens, Reuters quoted Zakharova as saying Thursday.

^Some countries do actually try to protect their citizens from illegal deportation. I know an old fashioned principle.

Are you suggesting VOA is not a propaganda source?

I think you mean "Putin always protects his hired criminals".

Perhaps you prefer the Guardian version. It seems the thicko comrade from the embassy doesn't know what an Extradition Treaty is.

Russia’s Tass and RIA Novosti news agencies quoted Prague’s Russian embassy spokesman, Alexey Kolmakov, as saying that it was insisting that the suspect be handed over to Russia.

“The embassy has been taking all necessary efforts to protect the interests of this Russian citizen. We are in contact with his attorney,” the embassy statement said.
“Russia repudiates Washington’s policy of imposing its extraterritorial jurisdiction on all countries. We insist that the detainee is handed over to Russia.”
Hmmmm I wonder who the Czechs trust more, the wannabe soviet imperialist or the US?

Russia went from being 2nd strongest army in the world to being the 2nd strongest in Ukraine

Really, I didn't experience that at all.

Look, if it's broadcast by VOA it's the truth.

You'll be telling me next that those "handsome man" calls I hear every day are lies too.

Exactly which bit of the story are you questioning?

For reference here is a list of countries NOT having an extradition Treaty with Ameristan <sic>.
None of which, funnily enough, is the Czech Republic. What's the relevance?

I don't know who these friends of yours are but close friends of my family are both Czech and Slovaks and they despise the Russians and do not in anyway trust them. There is good reason that they are both members of NATO.

From the first to the last letter of your posts, OK.

^Are you suggesting there was no such letter?

Judging from from the photo, the lack of bomb craters, buildings standing and people walking around without AK37s, it seems the tanks went in to the city without a bomb being dropped on a hospital/school/children's home being bombed back to the stone age. There does seem to be some concern for snipers on the rooftops though.

How quaint that some still believe in the legal requirements to invade a country.

    I'm touched harry, touched.

So you don't believe this person has been arrested?

You don't believe the US are seeking his extradition?

You don't believe Russia are demanding he's handed over?

Yes, all of the Eastern bloc countries were ecstatic at being invaded by Russia and occupied for decades.

I mean when they left, there was no celebration or anything was there? Just tinges of sadness.

You are clueless. Have you traveled to either nation? Do you know anyone who lives in those states? I thought not. Go back to slurping up RT and Sputnik propaganda you imbecile.
