FIVE people are feared dead after a plane carrying EU border officials crashed and burst into flames.

A small engine aircraft fell from the sky shortly after take off at Malta International Airport and erupted into a fireball on the runway.

Police sources say five people have died.

A witness said: "It was an explosion, a right ball of fire."

Another onlooker was sitting on a plane on the runway when disaster struck.

He said: "We were on the plane and most of us were half asleep when we heard a massive explosion followed by another explosion.

"We didn't know what was going on.

"I can imagine the pilot of our plane saw what happened but we just saw the aftermath.

"We can't believe it."

The cause of the crash is not yet known but all flights in and out of MIA have been cancelled.
