4 killed in Tel Aviv terror attack; 2 arrested

Four people were killed Wednesday night when terrorists opened fire at a popular market complex in Tel Aviv, Israeli authorities said.

Two terrorists were captured, Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said, with one shot and the second arrested at the scene. The attackers had dressed as Hasidic Jews, according to a law enforcement source briefed by Israeli officials.

The dead are Israelis, Rosenfeld said on Twitter.

Five people were injured, said Dr. Gil Fire, deputy director of Ichilov Hospital. The injured suspect also is at the hospital.

Information about a motive wasn't immediately available. No intelligence suggested an attack was imminent, Rosenfeld said.

Surveillance footage from a cafe near the shooting scene showed a scene of chaos, as panicked customers scrambled and rushed to escape.

Police survey the scene of a terror attack in Tel Aviv.

The shooting occurred about 9 p.m. local time at Sarona Market, a mixed-use development with a food hall, upscale retail, playgrounds, green space and residences on a central highway. CNN's Elizabeth Cohen described it as hip and trendy destination that's popular among tourists and locals.

The area was cleared while officers searched for explosives, Rosenfeld said, adding that the situation had come under control.

The market is across the street from Israel's Defense Ministry and main army headquarters.

Israeli authorities said terrorists attacked a popular gathering spot in Tel Aviv.

U.S. State Department deputy spokesman Mark Toner issued a statement condemning "today's horrific terrorist attack in Tel Aviv in the strongest possible terms."

"We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those killed and our hopes for a quick recovery for those wounded," he said. "These cowardly attacks against innocent civilians can never be justified. We are in touch with Israeli authorities to express our support and concern."

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon called on the Security Council to condemn the attack.

"Today's heinous attack sadly proves that when the international community refuses to condemn terror against Israelis, the next attack is only a matter of time," he said in a statement. "Terror in Tel Aviv must be treated the same as terror in Paris or Istanbul."

Rosenfeld said knife attacks have been more common lately, with the last shooting in Tel Aviv occurring months ago.

Hamas did not claim responsibility for the attack. But Hamas official Mushir al-Masri called the shootings a "heroic operation" and the group later issued an official statement promising the "Zionists" more "surprises" during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Well, dickhead, stop extending the settlements, withdraw to your borders, stop killing Palestinian children....and maybe you'll get some sympathy.
Oh, and sign all the nuclear treaties.

Why Tel Aviv? Maximum propaganda effect for the Islamic terrorists , lets face it, not many bustling tourist night spots in the Negev now is there ?

The biggest stumbling block to peace is Zionist aspirations of a Greater Israel.
Whatever Hamas do, Israel retaliates with death. Arguably justified. Settlement building, on the other hand, is out and out provocation, and is arguably the reason why Hamas hate Israelis and terrorise them or support terrorism against them.
On top of that provocation, the continued settlement expansion into Palestinian territory will inevitably lead to "Oh, there's too many innocent civilians settled there now, we CAN'T withdraw, why does the world always victimise us poor Jews? (as is the Israeli plan, NO DOUBT).

Another reason Hamas hate Israelis is the way the occupying force treat Gazan civilians: Stealing their water, blockading their city, road blocks, and numerous other cruel treatments.

No occupying forces does not mean not occupied. Gaza is considered by most of the world's nations and the UN and international law as "occupied" because it's borders are blockaded and it's sea and airspace completely controlled (occupied).

There are 2,700,000 Palestinians in the West bank and 400,000 Israeli "squatters " and yet in comparison to Gaza were there is no "squatters", Fattah under Mahmoud Abbas remain silent on the atrocity's in Tel Aviv whilst Hamas praise it ,does that not strike you as rather odd if its truly about occupying land? .and the article in my post 16 says it all ,the Hamas Multi millionaire leaders living in the lap of luxury in Doha shouts the orders simply cos whatever happens it won't affect them one iota .

I suppose this atrocity serves to remind the world of the ongoing, illegal occupation of Palestine, and the repression and brutalisation of the Palestinian people. I can certainly understand the anger. But I do think Tel Aviv was a very poorly chosen target, even by that radical terrorist mindset (which I do not condone). Tel Aviv, with it's diversity, urbanism, lib'rulism, secularism, relative affluence etc is part of the solution, not the problem. Some of those people killed or grievously wounded may well have utmost sympathy for the Palestinian plight, and wish for a just Peace accord.

I just really enjoy threads on Israel, it's a subject that is a never ending debate, with no finishing line.
That's why I seldom comment on it, it's pointless
