Crocodile takes Australian woman during night swim

Witnesses heard the woman yell "a croc's got me", according to reports
A woman is feared dead after a crocodile attack in Australia's Daintree National Park.

The 46-year-old Australian was reportedly swimming with a friend on Sunday evening at Thornton Beach near Cairns in northern Queensland state.

She was in waist-deep water when she was attacked, media reports said.

"Her 47-year-old friend tried to grab her and drag her to safety and she just wasn't able to do that.

"[The friend] then ran to a nearby business and raised the alarm, and from that point police and other authorities were advised.

"They had been walking along the beach and they've decided to go for a swim just in waist-deep water at Thornton Beach and probably a very nice, clear night, but obviously may not have been aware of the dangers."

A search for the missing woman resumed on Monday morning. Her friend is being treated for a graze and shock.

MP Warren Entsch blames 'human stupidity' for croc attack on Queensland beach

Federal MP Warren Entsch has warned against any crocodile backlash in his electorate, saying what appears to be a fatal attack on a tourist at a Queensland beach was "avoidable" and the result of "human stupidity".
"You can't legislate against human stupidity," he said on Monday

Used to lose two or three a year up there.
Everyone knows not to swim and it's well publicized and posted.

He may have a point but I think he might have phrased it a little better in consideration of the bereaved.

The Crocs couldn't have heard about Bob Katter.
Remember seeing him say, years ago after some other poor sod got killed, "We do not want Crocodiles swimming in OUR rivers"

There's been a proliferation of these saltwater crocs in the last few years, going further up-stream in fresh water fed estuaries, and getting further out to sea, too.

Australian MP blames 'human stupidity' for suspected fatal croc attack

    By Georgia McCafferty, for CNN

    Updated 0603 GMT (1403 HKT) May 30, 2016

A 46-year-old woman is feared dead after being attacked by a crocodile while swimming with a friend on a beach in far North Queensland in Australia.

The women, who were not from the area, were reportedly swimming in waist deep water on remote Thornton Beach, in the Daintree National Park in Cairns at about 10.30 p.m. Sunday night (8:30 a.m. ET) when the woman was taken by the crocodile.

North Queensland member for parliament, Warren Entsch, who represents the region, said the victim should be blamed for the attack, not the crocodile.
"You can't legislate against human stupidity," Entsch said on Monday, noting that Thornton Beach lies next to a creek where tourism operators run crocodile-spotting tours.

"This is a tragedy but it was avoidable. You can only get there by ferry, and there are signs there saying watch out for the bloody crocodiles," he added.
"If you go in swimming at 10 o'clock at night, you're going to get consumed."

More cattle and other animals inland, along with a ban/moratorium since 1971 on croc hunting led to a saltwater croc population explosion, encroaching on the less aggressive freshwater crocs' territories.

Cindy Waldron, 46, who is believed to have been taken by a crocodile at Thornton Beach

Her parents are from NZ, so I'm guessing she was a kiwi too. There was a spate of American tourists being taken from the NT, for the same reasons- ignorance. Drunk abo's not unknown too- I put that down to drunkenness & stupidity, rather than ignorance. Aussie's don't dance with estuarine crocs. Certainly not up there.

I'm afraid the MP (Warren Entsch), in spite of his bluntness, is entirely correct. You can't negotiate with a saltie. If you're on their turf and they want you, you're gone. RIP.

    I admit my ignorance.

So, salt-water crocs are more aggressive / dangerous than freshwater crocs/alligators?
