There aren't so many. There were a lot more 30 years ago and nobody panicked then.

The reaction now is based on a lesson learned from the U.S. Get the people whipped up into a froth of fear, panic, and paranoia and pretty much any law can be passed and any freedom restricted in the name of "safety" and "security".
