^ not sure that pigs are smarter or how we'd test that, but I agree with your general point.

Another I'll add is: there is nearly global acceptance of the whaling bans. But, some countries abuse the laws; some are Eastern (Japan) and some are Western (Norway).

Japan, in this case is abusing a law. They are lying by saying whaling is research. It is not research, they are whaling for food, and this is banned, globally, by signatories of the relevant governing bodies, including Japan.
    Cycling should be banned!!!

Pigs are smarter because they don't swim in the seas near Japan.

This, again is a completely different argument. The general argument is twofold: 1) we do need fish to survive, we don't need to eat whales to survive; 2) Mammals and especially ones that we consider close to us in intelligence, we treat differently from other animals, for better or worse, this is our social norm. So, we mostly don't eat our cats or dogs while we mostly don't give a toss about fish and chickens. When we see somebody who has chickens asleep on their bed, and eats dogs and cats, we generally think they are fuked up and should probably be locked away fro the good of society and their children! It is a social convention, I know, and social conventions are but conventions. But, they are conventions based upon what separates us from other animals and lower species - at this point, theSeekingasylum could better take over and elaborate the argument...

I see no difference between eating cod or minke. Neither are at risk.

I don't humanise dogs any more than I humanise fish.

I do object to slaughtering animals for no reason other than fun or stupid bloody mumbo jumbo.

I'd imagine a dog would look like a suckling pig to a North Korean.

japanese whaling is mostly done for no reason. Most Japs don't eat whale. Shops selling big fat whale burgers are in short supply.

The government has to subsidize the hunt each year to make it profitable. They have thousands of tons of whale meat stockpiled and are giving it to schools to get rid of it.

I could easily imagine that the likes of Sea Shepard, Greenpeace, et al [very well endowed organisations] would better themselves if they used their well connected form through a social, legal and legislative manner to justify their ends.

That's because it's all soaked in mercury and radioactive caesium and iodine.

    Yup.

Dolphins and whales are loaded with heavy metals and radioactive particles.

    I wouldn't eat them.

So what? That's a non argument.

    what are the arguments?

    1. Whales are endangered. Nope, not all.
    2. Whales are intelligent. Not so sure, and pigs are certainly more intelligent.
    3. erm.....

Western countries, nope Norwegians support whaling, um we don't like it.?

    Any others?

Don't forget the number of dolphins that find themselves regularly trapped in the tuna nets.

    Save the dolphins.
Levels of intelligence that trumps the whales and pigs.

    Animal cruelty?
Chasing them until they are exhausted and then shooting them with explosive harpoons......

We wouldn't let cows be killed like that...

And it also means, if they can find a humane way to kill them you'd be ok with them whaling then, right ?

    Endangered whale species
What part of "Nope, not all (whales are endangered)" do you not understand ?

Even the link you've provided, which is a Finnish Theme park BTW, does not agree with you. Only 2 out of the 10 Whale species listed are endangered in that list, and neither of the endangered species are actively hunted by the Japanese.

ICeland and Norway should stop too.
Japan will be forced to soon anyway as they cannot afford to maintain the fleet.
Then they can work on stopping the 20,000 dolphins killed each year.
