Upset by a delayed flight, at least two Chinese passengers decided to open emergency exit doors in protest, forcing it to abort takeoff and landing them in jail instead, police said Sunday.

The latest in a growing number of air rage cases involving Chinese travellers happened in the early hours of Saturday morning in the southwestern city of Chengdu, after the China Eastern flight was delayed by a snow storm.

Angry passengers complained about the delay and a lack of ventilation, and a man surnamed Zhou opened three emergency exits to prevent the plane from taking off, forcing it to return to the gate, according to state broadcaster China Central Television. A total of 25 passengers — all part of a single tour group — were held for questioning while the rest continued on to Beijing aboard a separate flight.

Kunming police said in an online statement that Zhou and a tour guide named Li have been placed under 15-day "administrative detention" for opening the doors and inciting passengers with false information.

The plane's ventilation system had been turned off for 30 minutes during de-icing work to prevent fumes from entering the cabin, China Eastern maintenance engineer Zhu Yun told CCTV. Although the co-pilot had been dispatched to explain, passengers remained irate even after the plane left the gate, reports said.

"Opening those doors was extremely dangerous because there was nothing to protect passengers from the force of the engines," Zhu said.

China's fast growing air-travel market is the world's second biggest, but heavy traffic and tight military control of airspace have given it the world's worst record for flight delays.

Cancellations, delays and service complaints spark frequent incidents of air rage at airports and aboard flights, including those to and from foreign destinations. Brawls between passengers and attacks on crew are often filmed and posted online.

China's National Tourism Administration said it fully supported the police action, and said it had ordered its Beijing and Kunming offices to carry out further investigations, suggesting more passengers could be implicated.

The report doesn't mention how long the delay was but if it was anywhere near 3 hours then I can see why they were very angry. I think the airline should bear some of the responsibility rather than just blaming the passengers for getting up and doing something about their predicament.

Funny thing is , i have never had the slightest hassle flying in china, may of been lucky, but then have never flown in middle of winter though where you would expect delays.
most flights it seemed i was the only westerner aboard but great service and as i always book a window seat so i can have a look around, the chinese next to me always
nudge me me to indicate the cabin staff want to serve food.
A lot of the behaviour posted is not much different to bogans in the west on budget flights,except for the door openings,some of the western scum flying make you wish you were on a different plane.
the best thing is going through security when the security girl has to get a box to stand on so she can frisk me for i am too tall,carn't get above the waist otherwise.

But as I read it, the plane had already left the gate!

I can understand being pissed, but this action just delayed the flight further.

If I had been sitting there for three hours, just left the gate and taxi'ing for take off, and some tosser opened the door, I would have kicked the everloving shit out of the wanker....

I have had some interesting experiences flying in china - one where passengers invaded the tarmac which required the police to be called out

Hong Kong Chinese regard themselves as British Chinese and a race apart from their mainland cousins whom they have come to despise for the reasons exampled by Tax.
The only real difference between them all is that most civilised HKSAR folk are Christians and lead their lives according to that ethic which is of course utterly alien to the heathen Asian savage enslaved by superstition, necromancy and animism.

NB. I don't include Americans for obvious reasons.

The mainland Chinese have very low tolerance levels that prevent them from reverting to savages.

...or from dropping their trousers and defecating whenever the urge strikes, or renting their clothes from their backs and running around screaming like barbarians.

In this respect, Thais are wired in the same way, but what prevents Thais from acting is not only their apathy, but the social convention of 'Jai Yen'....which prevents them from punching each other - even though they'd like to.

I've never been delayed AT THE GATE. It's always in the que on the taxiway.

Interesting enough, skytrax' 5 star airlines are all Asian, except Qatar, but it is staffed mostly by Asians and whities. Having been in Europe this month, I had the "pleasure" of flying some EU airlines. The pax, although not as rude and pushy as those found on the east coast of the USA and the central part of Canada are getting there. Chinese pax react well to being herded and bossed around, Western pax do not. And for our special friends in the middle east and the India/Pakistan region,it's a lost cause.
