It is a democratic agreement among the people of western civilisations that religion is no longer above satire.

Witness our own religion Christianity satirised and ridiculed in The Life of Brian for example.

The preciousness with which religious beliefs and sensitivities used to be held and protected was a pernicious fault which progressive western values have now eschewed.

I am very happy to be part of a society that has grown out of religious preciousness. No religion is above this satirisation and any religion that claims to be above the rules needs its face pushed in its own shit like a recalcitrant mut. Religion is not race. The cartoons in question were not very offensive. Quite gentle stuff really. The offence the extremists take is their 'prophet' being depicted graphically which is against their 'rules'. However, their rules do not apply to us. They need to understand this. If they want to protest they can do so in a civilised manner but it is not likely that we will be undoing our cultural progress to accomodate their sensitivities. Why should we?
