In respect to cancer, well, it is indeed the result of out of control cell growth caused by the cell operating instructions going on the fritz. As we age, the likelihood of cells being unable to repair damage deteriorates and the copying process of genetic materials builds up more sequential errors. It is indeed common sense. Environmental factors do impact the copying sequence and can and do cause errors which results in "cancer". The larger the population pool, the greater the impact of lifestyle and environmental impact. Biology 101.
