Giant George – The World’s Tallest Dog Has Died

Giant George – The World’s Tallest Dog Has Died
    Michael Rothman
    Oct 24, 2013

The world has lost a gentle giant.

Giant George, verified as the world’s tallest dog by Guinness World Records, died last Thursday, one month before his eighth birthday.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce Giant George died on Thursday, October 17, 2013,” his owners, David and Christine Nasser, posted on GiantGeorge.com. “George passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones … We appreciate the love and support you have given Giant George over the last several years.”

Giant George, 3 feet, 7 inches from paw to his shoulder and almost seven feet long, was known for his appearance on shows like “Live with Regis & Kelly” and “Good Morning America.”

The Great Dane, owned by Dave and Christie Nasser, was actually the runt of the litter, according to the website.

“Eager to play … this big Great Dane was scared of water, scared of dogs a fraction of his size and, most of all, scared of being alone,” the site said.

The owners donated a percentage of Giant George merchandise to animal charities and in 2011, donated more than $500 to a Japanese animal shelter after the country was hit hard by both an earthquake and tsunami.

Family, friends and fans have all posted to George’s Facebook page with their condolences.

“Thanks to the Nasser family for sharing him with the world. He will be missed,” one fan wrote.

Used to see a Great Dane riding down the highway wearing goggles, with his head fully out the sunroof while sitting in the backseat of his owner's SUV...

    Great fun...

I wonder why the breed is called Great Dane in English speaking countries, it's from Germany. We call them 'Deutsche Dogge'. A butcher in the neighbourhood had a giant one, he always came and put its front paws on the fence when I walked by. I'm two metres tall, but his head was a long way above mine. Probably wanted to show me what a short guy I am.

    Sad news

My Great Dane is the by far the most stupid dog I've ever owned, real funny though. She's huge but thinks she is a tiny laptop, no idea of her own size and constantly walking into things and knocking stuff over. If I had a baht for every glass she has broken I'd be a rich rich man!

Originally they are believed to be imported from England as some sort of mastiff/Irish wolfhound mix!, so if that is true they are neither a German breed or Danish if you go right back.

The German claim is still disputed, the kennel breed standards was set in Denmark and are the ones that still counts, and as late as 2010 the German claim to this dog's origins was challenged by the Danish kennel club.

Here is some stuff from wikipedia -

After World War II The Secretary General of the FCI Baron A. Houtart writes a letter, copied to the Danish national kennel association. The letter is dated 15 November 1948 and says in French:

"Pour la F.C.I. cette race a toujours été et reste encore une race nationale danoise ; seul le standard déposé par le Dansk Kennelklub est officiel à ses yeux"

"As far as the FCI is concerned, this breed [The Great Dane] has always been and shall remain a Danish breed; only the standard provided by the Danish national kennel association is the official one in our view."

The original letter is kept with the FCI and the Great Dane Club of Denmark.
However, today the FCI designates the Great Dane as German breed.[2] The Broholmer is known as the Mastiff of Danish origin.[40] In 2010 the Danish Kennel Club challenged this estimation.[41]

In 1936 the Nazis demanded that the Danes stopped their claim and use of the name, German popularity in old historic Europe may be one reason why the German name was never accepted by the English speaking nations as a kind of "fuck you"

Anyway I don't know what is right or wrong in all this, all I know is that I have known some very lovely dogs of that breed and think it is a "Great" dog in any case.

Nice dogs but you would need a big house with lots of ground to keep a pet that big.
