Chinese state television has accused McDonald’s and French retailer Carrefour of selling expired chicken products in separate incidents amid public anxiety in China over food safety.

McDonald’s and Carrefour issued public apologies on March 16 and said they were investigating the report by China Central Television.

The report released on March 15 said a McDonald’s restaurant in Beijing sold chicken wings 90 minutes after they were cooked while the company’s rules set a 30-minute limit. It said employees at a Carrefour store in the central city of Zhengzhou changed expiration dates on some chicken and sold regular chickens as more expensive free-range birds.

Food safety is a sensitive issue in China, which has been rocked by scandals ranging from deadly infant formula to chemical-laced pork and recycled restaurant oil.

“McDonald’s China attaches great importance to this. We will immediately investigate this isolated incident, resolutely deal with it earnestly and take concrete actions to apologize to consumers,” said a statement by the U.S.-based restaurant chain on its website.

Employees who answered the phone at McDonald’s China headquarters in Shanghai said a spokeswoman was not available and declined to give any other details.

Carrefour, based in Paris, said it was setting up a team to investigate and would cooperate with Chinese authorities.

“We will further enhance the training and take measures to ensure to earnestly implement the relevant provisions to safeguard the interests of consumers,” said a statement on the website of Carrefour’s China unit.

Last year, U.S. retailer Walmart. was fined by authorities in the southwestern city and 13 stores were ordered to close for two weeks on charges of passing off regular pork as higher-priced organic meat.

How many restaurants in the world have a limit of 30 mins ?
Nothing wrong with eating fried chicken after several hours.

Time limits have been around since Japan and I support this - why should the busy restaurant deny many customers, because one loser fake english teacher who ordered the least expensive meal, is holding the table

That is great. However you escaped the little bit of an question about euro central socialist government where 11 of 27 "commissars" (yeah, as in soviet politbyro) are actually ex/present communists, you can start with the head man barroso who was a leader of maoist communists in portugal. Target2 imbalances, Germany is down some 500 billion (The Netherlands about 150 bn, Finland about 100bn, Luxembourg about 100bn) and - there is no and. These four countries alone are funding all of fuc*ing "old europe" Looks like UK and the Netherlands and Finland should better join NAFTA or ASEAN or The Commonwealth. Germans would be welcomed, but their euro politicians are driving the country to the ground.

I forgot to mention that these EU bastards are not elected by anyone, and can not be sacked by anyone. Nice design for dictatorship.

A bit of socialism ain't bad. A health insurance dictated by our Führers is a good thing. But when somebody tells me how big my Banana is suppose to be, things get out of hand.
Oh, and before I forget: "Greece can go to hell!" , thats where my love for socialism ends.

Apologizing? Seems like in the US they would just say they are checking into it.Are these statements coming from a fearful Chinese citizen?

Do they have an extradition treaty that allows them to pull CEOs from the US for trial in Chinese courts? Maybe the America CEOs fear execution in China.

Both incidents would certainly have been sanctioned at local Chinese manager/owner operator (McD's) level in order to make some extra money for themselves.

That is correct, it was a local chain. However I do support China. Where are you and where am I when the chips fall down? Fucking European Union going intergalatic? You know they want to bring Australia down as well.
