I nearly got caught out on that last year before a trip to Krakow. I read about it in a newspaper and after some frantic googling and calls to the airline realised I would not be allowed to board my flight in one weeks time.

It entailed applying for a new passport, not an easy task in todays England where civil servants are reluctant to serve and everything possible is done to make life difficult for those seeking service.

Cost me £200 and necessitated a trip to the Passport office in Durham a couple of days before my flight.

Just another example of how little the smirking fat bureaucrats of both the rancid EU and the unthinking UK care about the lives of those we elect to look after our interests as they construct ever more obstacles to impede our progress, convenience and happiness.

I had to go online, find my nearest passport office and book an appointment. There were only two appointments left before my depature in the whole fucking country. One was in Belfast, the other Durham.

Contrast that with my wifes renewal of her Thai passport in Bangkok. All done in 30 minutes and entailing a short trip to the Khlong Toei underground station where they have one of Bangkoks many passport offices. No appointment necessary, a 10 minute wait, then another 10 minutes for the paperwork and photo, pay a couple of hundred baht and the new passport was delivered by courier the next day.

This isn't really news, it was discussed here on TD a year or so back.
I have one of the affected passports so I'll be applying for a replacement in good time.
The aspect of this that still wrankles with me is that because it is a direct benefit of Brexit, one of many, the government tried to bury it. Just try searching gov.uk for the information. Any respectable government would put this front and centre on their website so that their citizens don't get caught out. Not this bunch of tossers.

the uk press has been full of this story for a long time, anybody not aware of it, including myself, have only themselves to blame and not spout the catch all "its the governments fault" that rings from everyones lips as soon as things dont go the expected way.

The Government did publish yhis on their website and in the press. They did so in the Summer of 2019 and I knew about it in Germany. I ended up with the red passport with no EU label in October of that year.

you cant enter a schengen country if theres less than 3 months left on your passport at any time while youre travelling or your passport is 10 years old or more on the day you enter the EU country, counted from the date your passport was issued

Since 2001, some adult British passports were issued with a validity longer than 10 years. This is because if you renewed your passport before it expired you were allowed to have the time left on your old passport added to your new passport. The maximum validity period possible was 10 years and 9 months. This means that you cannot rely on using the expiry date to check if your adult passport will be valid under the new Schengen* Border Rules (see list of countries below). From 10 September 2018 extra validity was no longer added to British passports and the maximum validity for a new adult British passport became 10 years, and for a child passport it was 5 years. they didnt add any months, those months had already been paid for by the applicants ( applying for early renewal because of damage or full pages) and were included in the validity of the new passports. some were 9 months some were only a month. depended on how early the renewal was.

had they not been included people would have complained, and nobody complained about the benefits of having an extra few months.

i realised the problem ( caused entirely by the eu, putting their obsession with stifling bureaucracy above the needs and convenience of the travelling public. overcome by chagrin it was just one way their pathetic and small minded pen pushers found to needle a country that had democratically decided to leave their union, a union btw that has not fared well of late.) before it was too late and took steps to rectify it.

i also got to visit the 11th century durham cathedral, intact norman architecture at its finest, the oldest surviving building with a stone vaulted ceiling of such a vast size and a unesco world heritage site to boot!
