Subscriptions and threads

Can you subscribe to a thread without first having to post to it?

There are some great threads on this site that I want to follow, but I don't want to ruin them by posting shit just to subscribe to them.

I find that I am subscribed automatically to every thread I read...which is most annoying...

When I clicked on "Thread Tools" above, before posting this comment, "Subscribe to this Thread" appeared, 3rd one down.
Were you logged in when you tried before?
