mummy doesn't like me going to Thailand

I guess most of you at some point have had the snide comments or 'nods and winks' when you tell people you're off to Thailand again. It seems to attract this more from those that have never been or think of themselves as cleaner than the driven snow.

I'm a single chap in my mid thirties so it's pretty obvious to me why I go to Thailand buy why people take it upon themselves to preach as to what foreign country you choose to go to is beyond me.

Any else get pissed off with this?

Yep, my folks were not over the moon with the idea of me living here. They did what they wanted to with thier lives and seem pretty miserable with the results. enough said.

I believe Cambodia and Vietnam have far higher levels of prostitution but they generally aren't associated with whoring in the same way Thailand is.

I couldn't give a rats arse what they think of me living here. I think my sister is living a waste of a life in the UK, but I'm sure she doesn't want me telling her so, either.

Most of my childhood friends are locked into their 'lives' back in the UK and are unable or unwilling to try anything otherwise.

I have had three such mates visit me out here and wanna stay on, but they can't.

I didn't go back to the UK this month like I usually do each year at this time but last year I had to listen to all the bad points about this country from those who had never been here:

"Be careful of the girls, they might be boys hahahah" Fuckin hilarious eh!!!

"They got a massive child prostitution problem there, right?" Yeah, like they haven't got that in every other nation on earth.

"I heard the people are forced to respect their king and wear yellow right?" Yeah that sure is the case. ask anybody....

"The girls are all forced to sell themselves for a better life right? That's disgusting and immoral. Pat you're better than that mate" That came from a female friend. Well guessed.

^ I hope you told them that at least you won't end up with a fat pig for a missus, and even if you did, you'd just pop out for a few nights and get a nice, new one.

This fact doesn't seem to register in the UK, because girls being that obese is classed as mormal.

Anyway, as another farang female reminded me, Thai girls are all "submissive barbie dolls"

My parents were a bit suspicious until they came out here to stay for a couple of weeks - they had the best holiday they'd ever had and have been six more times.

I think most of us coming from the u.k (i can't speak for other western countries, but imagine it's similar) have received the comments and suspicion of others we know in our home country. This is to a large extent because of the incredibly one dimensional coverage that Thailand receives in the media. If it's not a major event like the tsunami or the coup, then reporting in the U.K media tends to revolve around prostitution, paedophiles and mail order brides.

Consequently a lot of people think they know what Thailand is all about. The women in Thailand are seen as desperate chancers, involved in either borderline or outright prostitution, and men who visit Thailand, for whatever motivations, are generally seen as whoremongering degenerates delighting in their opportunities to exploit impoverished third world women.

It's interesting to hear the reactions of the media and the general public in the wake of the 'Sufolk Strangler' situation, to the revelations about the extent of prostitution in the U.K.

It seems to have come as quite a shock to those who presumed that prostitution was the preserve of Thailand and other developing nations, to find out that it is a phenomenen that is happening quite extensively in their own back yard. Cue plenty of hand wringing, soul searching and laments about the moral decrepitude of the nation.

Nevermind, i'm sure when it's all resolved it will be back to stereotyping other countries and their visitors and delighting in the condemnation of the scandalous practices that, of course, aren't commonplace in British society.
