^ They're also awful when executed incorrectly and destroy tables.

With regard to the rules (here in any bar) I normally ask (if not sure) the Thai girl who has racked the balls whether I can play a particular shot.

Do what the locals do and enjoy the game win or lose.

LT pretty much hit the nail on the head. I actually owned a snooker hall at one time in my younger days and have played 8-ball throughout many states while in the Army.

The rules are really simple. You follow the House Rules. It is their house, their rules.

    Anyone play snooker here?
I go about once or twice a fortnight and am still shit (been playing regually for near on 20 years!).
Thai snooker halls are cool. Most have a VIP room where you pay about another 40 baht an hour on top of the ususal rate with a short skirted female referee thrown in.
Play pool just as much, but prefer the relaxing nature of playing with a mate or 3 around the green baize (insert joke here...)

^ Yeah, I play a bit of snooker, couple of great halls near me, cheap beer, good food and hot women.

Usually play with only 6 reds - seems to be the go here in Thailand.

The gayest thing about these rules is the tap snooker allowed. You can just tap the white behind your ball for an easy snooker. They don't have the rule where any ball must hit a cushion after the white makes contact else it's a foul. Guess it's too complex for everybody to get a hold of, but that's proper comp. 8 ball rules (fuck knows what they play in America but it's weird after listening to yanks whine endlessly about the rules). They're never the same either (different seppos and their version of 'the rules')

PM me Socal if you;re ever up this way we can have a few racks I'll show you the best place in town to play.
Been really busy but i will let u know if im in the area.

Snooker pockets are a total bitch if you don't practice at least twice a week IMO

I conceded defeat to avoid issues and paid up 20 THB.
according to the interpretation of what happened to me by other BMs, you win because they say no matter what happens, if you call the ball in the pocket,it doesnt matter what happens after that

    jump shots are fun.

I also call the 8 in the left side on every break i do. The Low left English on the white and hit the third ball in the triangle on the right trick. I have done it 2 times in a row before.

So basically, I thought and my dad thought that you call the 8 ball at the end to avoid flukes. So everyone is saying you can shoot the 8 ball, have in bank off 10 ends of the table, and have it go in your pocket and you get the win ? Sounds like a fluke to me...

    Yes its a fluke,

Its nice for the luck to go with you, rather than away from you all the time, the way you play

True dat. Back home and also here in CM, most pool tables are small pocketed, though there's a few US style big pocketed ones around.

It's not so much that the pockets are small (though that sure doesn't make it any easier, but remember that snooker balls are a bit smaller than pool balls) but rather that the corners of the pockets are rounded rather than sharp like on a pool table, which makes them less forgiving.

Where I grew up that would be 'in off', you'd lose unless you called it, but then different towns, different pubs even would of often have variances, particularly of the penalty shot rules.

its a fluke so it should not count because the only point in calling the 8 is to avoid flukes. But if it is widely accepted the way everyone here i saying then i will just say its a stupid rule.

As I understand it, on the 8 ball here you call the pocket, not the shot...

In the pool league I play its the pocket thats called, not the shot.

Also black potted from the break would result in a re-rack not a win.

But saying that since I've been here have played in 3 different leagues and none of them had the same rules.

That would get right on my tits if I was playing some random dude and he kept on calling a pocket on each break. Nearly as bad as the 60 year old hotshot who wears the "pool glove" thing to make his cuing smoother, but is still shit at the f**king game!
It is my obervations that you should only wear certain apparrel or possess the tools of the trade if you are good at the game you are partaking in.
Example - White football boots or a pack of tungsten darts with shit hot fancy flights them.
    Tossers.
    Drives me potty it does.

    --UPDATE--

Just realised I'm one of the blokes I'm moaning about. I have my own (expensive) snooker cue and have the ability of 7 year old.

Entirely different. Your own cue is a necessity if you have played more than twice. But the glove is deffo suss....

I've got a few expensive pool cues myself (though I can beat most 7-year-olds).

Have you ever checked out Master Cue in Thailand? They are supposed to make some very high-quality snooker cues- I'm not a snooker player, but I know of them by reputation.

What about the leather pouch for the chalk?

I bought my cue here from a little shop called 'Pattakan' snooker, they have a factory somewhere in the north. Decent snooker cue that would cost about double back home for the same quality (it was 2500 THB). Far from high-end but it does the job.

Are you sure it wasn't Pattanakarn? They've got a shop in Bangkok, and they make Sovereign tables, which are some of the best in Asia.
