Is quite correct. A region of SE Asia which was never colonized by a Western power.

Bob changed his post. It originally said "Thai history books say.."

Well I guess a Thai history book might have more creedence than what "Thais generally say.." but obviously Bob isn't so sure about standing on the shaky ground of Thai history whatever the source.. and who can blame him.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

More like he knows that is what the bunch of idiots who have no idea about anything will use to try and twist the truth to their narrow little way of seeing things.....

Anyhow, many Thai history books were written by westerners, I doubt many on here have read them though.

If they were freely available and not punishable by LM charges, then I might have read a few.

You are correct madjbs with your statement. I think Thai history (recent and past) has been distortred somewhat by the powers that be due to conflicting interests.
Same as with all history actually.

Colonized by the Chinks and then the Japs then bcak to the Chinks. Still colonized today, Thais are just too stupid to know.

Ethnic Thais are little more than slaves and whores to their Chinky colonist masters.

Apparently the OP's definition of colinization requires annexation.

Thailand has never been annexed. They've just gave away parcels of land instead.

I changed it because what I first wrote wasn't entirely accurate. Thais learn history from history books in school, therefore their general understanding of Thai history comes from those books. Therefore they generally say what those books say when they talk about Thai history. Thais are taught, from books, that Thailand is the only SE Asian nation that wasn't colonized by the West, when discussing this with them they repeat what they learned from those books. Is that too difficult for you to understand? Judging by the shallowness and ignorance displayed posts I have to assume that you're one of those people who think that books only come in bright colours and have 9 panels of pictures on every page.

I doubt many people on here have read any book that didn't have the author's name in 4-inch-high silver letters on the front. The vast majority of Thai history books are written by Thais. Many Thai academic history books are excellent, (though that might be changing with what now appears to be a crackdown on Thai academics who don't toe the party line). I get the impression that many people here have only ever seen elementary school Thai history books and the popular nonsense sold on discount book stalls at the mall.

True. That really irritates you, doesn't it, little man?

Why not be condescending when faced with wanton ignorance and stupidity. Condescension and sarcasm is a hell of a lot better than what I really want to do when faced with one of TD's many geniuses who believe that their combination of ignorance, bigotry, and egomania is a substitute for knowledge and understanding, which is gas them.

DrBob - You're a very bright person who has brought invaluable knowledge and insight to this forum, particularly regarding Thai history. However, you have a chip on your shoulder larger than Mount Everest. You might want to work on this.

^Nah. Don't care enough about the opinions of most on here. I get on fine with the people here that I have respect for, as for the rest, meh. Taking advice on improving my online personality from most of the freaks on here is like taking advice on babysitting from a paedophile.

The space before dtok is removable in Google translate, which uncharacteristically provides a workable translation- "In the Southeast Asian region that is not a colony of the West."

Which is true as far as it goes.

Not at all. It amuses me greatly to see you displaying a trait that is almost the hallmark of Thai academics. An inability to accept questioning. You attitude of "how dare you question what I say" is displayed in classrooms and lecture halls across Thailand daily.

The Thai attitude basically stems from insecurity - they often have a thin veneer of knowledge, but no real depth of understanding. Questioning risks showing just how thin that veneer is, and so they stomp on questioning as hard as they can. Its one of the greatest defects in the Thai education system.

To see you display the same trait is, indeed amusing.

So Bob, just how thin is your veneer?

What are you talking about? I always respond to questions. As far as giving reasonable responses to sensible questions about Thailand I've done at least as much of that as almost anybody here. What sensible questions have I dismissed? List some for me, sensible ones, with links to where I just dismissed them out of hand.

Well I learned something. My Mrs is very proud of her understanding of Thai national historical heritage. I don't think Ill tell her that the only reason her homeland was'nt overrun by us lot was that no one could be bothered.

    Seriously some good perspectives..........some,,,,,?

Sure So, as usual you leapt in to do your disgruntled gnome routine and started firing off accusations. But, also as usual, when challenged to back up your direct statements it turns out, as always, that you're making these accusations up because you're too much of a little man to just admit you don't like how I post. Man up and just say that I piss you off, there's no need for you to fictionalize in order to justify it, you don't need any justification. Yes, I'm an asshole to people I think are dumb, but don't accuse me of being a universal asshole, I'm one hell of a lot more helpful on here to people in general than you've ever been.
