In my industry (I.T) they always seem to try to take the best technicians and turn them into the worst managers.

The best manager that I ever had new very little about I.T, but had fantastic people skills and a great team to provide the technical skills that he didn't have.

Technicians usually don't enjoy being managers, as they can't enjoy the tinkering and bantering that they joined for in the first place. Having a manager parachuted atop technical types can be good if they are ultimately the engineer's bitch.
