Thread: The dating scene in England...is there something I'm missing here?

In just over two years back in England I have been out and about..pubs, clubs, singles nights, salsa nights, basically in a position to chat up girls to go on dates, or just have 'gigs'. But, my silver tongue seems to have a rather different effect over here.

Many of my proven chosen words have raised one or two eyebrows or made one or two girls shy away. What am I doing wrong? Uglier guys are getting chicks with lesser conversation pieces (I have overheard a few). In some cases, I am made to feel like a leper, useless, inept. Going home alone can be hard on the ego when you've set out to get otherwise.

Don't get me wrong, I have been successful at times, and I'll admit that if it was Thailand I wouldn't have touched those girls in a million years. They weren't pig ugly, but neither were they oil painting material.


Identities have been masked to save face

Being out of practise on the UK dating scene is obviously a factor. Society here deems the male species useless and inferior, and media influence / imagery is not as conservative as it is back in Thailand. Girls give out numbers to send you flirty texts with no intention of meeting up with you, the exchange of emails leads to suggestive, flirtatious chat online, but that's as far as it goes. I was looked on as wierd for trying to instigate a meeting, in person, 'live', so to speak.

I've obviously missed out on a few new social habits in my time away.

Have I just had it too easy in almost seven years of living in Thailand? I don't mean the easy option, you know what I mean (bargirls), and let's not go there. I mean obtaining a 'date' and then going out on it. With some Thai girls, it's sometimes better that the command of english is low, as I hate too much in depth conversation in advance.

It's easy to say that western women have become too loud, demanding, risque, drunk, overweight, and whatever else 'girl power' created, and I do blame that quite a bit. Before I left the UK in 2002, my pulling skills were no different to when I was in Thailand.
I get a far far better response from foreign ( I hate that word ) girls, that's true. Plenty of east European, Chinese, Indian, a few Thai, Filipino.

Then again I am in Cornwall.

London is a totally different story, I'm as good in London as I was in Bangkok, but I'm almost 300 miles from there. The plan is to be back living in London within the year, and then I won't be moaning like this.

Well observed. And I fully agree. British girls can be a bit too full of themselves in many cases, and just over the channel in Europe the class is much higher.

the guys chatting them up have probably seen them before. Even if it was one time, that helps.

Your odds are 15 or 20 to one. For every 20 girls u talk to, 1 will pan out. That goes for anyone really whether they admit it or not.

Yeah, agreed.

I suppose changes in society over the years have created a new breed of 'alpha' females, though these can be very attractive if they have the looks and figure. They can also be very hard work, under no circumstances should you ever show any weakness or emotion and don't ever be romantic or even nice you will be called a woman or a poof by them.

I don't quite know where western women are going with this attitude, I don't think it's really been thought through properly. Like the rest of society we're just wondering aimlessly off the path that doesn't lead anywhere with our heads in a cloud of advertising and materialism, becoming more and more detached from nature and not having a clue who we are or where we are going - yet we have the audacity to call it progress, I guess because time moves forward so surely humanity must too right?

Wrong, and the scales never seem to be balanced. The only thing more unattractive than a 'ladette' seeking to intimidate a man is a subservient woman seeking to be a good traditional wife.

No, they have a different problem, delusions of sophistication - much like the modern Bangkok girl who adopts the hiso frame of mind.

I've met you a few times Butterfly and, no disrespect, but you're about as sophisticated as a whoopee cushion.

The old rule of "be mean and keep 'em keen" worked for me every time in the western world.

Until I met my current Thai mrs, I've no need to be a cnut to her.

Well Pat, maybe you're making the classic mistake of targeting women at the top of the food chain, the ones who are sort of attractive and still bare a vague similarity to something female. If you want to improve your chances you should become a bottom feeder and target the women who look like the British armys next secret weapon of mass destruction. Just ply them and yourself with liberal amounts of hard alcohol then at the end of the evening all you have to do is find a van and a forklift to get them home with and you're all set.

Alternatively, just pretend you're still in Thailand and simply translate your tried and tested chat up lines into English. Here are a few starters :

' Hi, fancy coming back to my place for an all night Som Tam session '

' I know a great bamee stand near here ..... let's py dooay gan !

' I'm driving to Nong Kai tomorrow and need some company to order the food '

' Nah, of course I'm not an English teacher.....I've got a real job as a DJ. '

try the canteen at tescos, the kitchen staff do great sloppy seconds there.
