    Best note prompts auction fever

The George Best £5 note has appeared on auction sites

Notes commemorating Northern Ireland soccer legend George Best have been offered for sale at six times their face value - before they have even been released.
More than 40 auctions offering the notes are taking place on the online auction site eBay - some asking £30 for one note.
The Ulster Bank limited edition £5 notes is a tribute to the Manchester United footballing genius marking the first anniversary of his death.
Application forms for the notes will be available from Ulster Bank branches in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland or online from Monday.
The notes will then be available to purchase at any Ulster Bank branch in Northern Ireland from 27 November.
An Ulster Bank spokesperson said there had been a huge amount of interest in the notes - from as far away as South Africa and the United States - but that there was no need to pay more than £5 for them.
He said that those offering the notes for sale have not even received them.
"Anyone who wants one of the notes can log onto the georgebestfive.com website pay £5 and the bank will send them a George Best note," he said.
He added that with 1,000,000 of the notes being printed those interested should not have to pay more than the face value - unless they were being auctioned by a registered charity.
Postal applications can also be made and notes are also available from branches of the bank.
The note shows Best in both his Northern Ireland and Manchester United strips.
The bank has also made a donation to the George Best Foundation to support the promotion of cross-community contact through participation in football.

[QUOTE="Tony Montana"]Its a truly fitting tribute to an absolute fukin legend on the footie pitch..who then turned into a complete waste of breath who would have been living in a gutter had it not been for some game he played in a competent manner many moons ago. The fact he was famous for being an alky far longer than he was playing football is irrelevant, he will be remembered for the very intelligent way he managed to fuck up TWO livers.

Nobody can deny that he had an amazing talent, most would question his lifestyle, but the fact is that he brought a lot of joy to a lot of people with his football ability, when his career started people here in northern ireland got a welcomed distraction from the troubles that were going on at that time for 90 mins on a saturday afternoon.Belfast city airport has now changed its name to George Best airport and he has been put on a five pound note, My friends father was the Goal keeper at man utd and close friends with George Best, he stayed with him for 6 months after he got out of prison and had no place else to go, my friend would not hear a bad word said against him and said that anyone who knew him loved him.

We all have done things in the past that we regret, But his mistakes were news stories, some accurate and some blown out of proportion.

I know I will go to the bank and get a few of these notes, if I get tired looking at them I will sell them(they are worth £100 already).

I agree 100%, I didn't have the pleasure of seeing Besty live but to this day I still enjoy watching the footage of this footballing wizard, I am disappointed people are judging him on a personal level nobodies perfect.

He was good, but I don't buy into all this 'Saint George' nonsense - I think that the 'attraction' was that he had the combination of talent and 'looks'. Mere talent in an ugly frame does not suffice for long-term super-stardom in this shallow world....Who for instance remembers my stunning hole-in-one on the infamous 'windmill' hole at the Margate crazy golf course 1982 - no one except me - and why, because I have a head like a gnu.

A waste of talent and life, shame that.

Didn't and couldn't show a tiny bit of self restraint or control.

    George Best's quotes:

"When I die I'd like to be remembered as the greatest footballer of all time. When that day comes, they won't talk about the booze, the women, the fast cars. They'll talk about the football"
Tough luck - they mostly talked about the booze, women, etc.

"I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered"
    Funny but, sadly, so true.

Best's sister Barbara broke down in tears as she was presented with the first note... Battling with her tears, she continued: "To you George, you are and will remain greatly missed."
Sorry, was that "missed" or "pissed"?
