I was trying to think of the cruelest thing I've ever done.
My ex wife ran off with another fellow some years back.
I got the bastard back though...
I let him keep her.
Sadistic MF ein't I?

Holly, it's an intereesting question; especially here in Thailand.
My feeling is that it's a very dangerous word. For example, I was helping with the translation of the recent government university syllabus program, and basically, thanks to our friends in the army/Democratic party, every subject taught at every university must observe the rules (and be proven to do so by the teacher running each and every course) to abide by the new code of Thai 'morals and ideals'. I was working through with my Thai friend (who has a PhD in applied linguistics, studied in Australia, very smart...) and neither of us could work out any benefit to the students; we were both fearful of the motivation of adding this idea to each and every syllabus.
Basically, as from now (stating last week) all the courses taught on every degree program; politics, English, history, art, international business, music, etc, must be taught in a way that promotes (and is seen ,and testable as such, to promote) the correct 'morals and ideals' as stated by the ministry of education.
Morals and Ideals then, according to the people in power at the time.
It's a popular trick in Thailand to use the word 'morals' to force people to act in a way that benefits certain groups in powerful positions. Which, is completely immoral in my opinion.

Ermm, like religion then BB.
I don't disagree Dogcatcher. If religion and its 'morals' is forced on others then I very much dislike it (hate to see the Christians out and about in Bkk...).
One good thing about the Buddhists is that they don't bother other folk with it. Religous folk that get on with it without bothering others, and forcing their 'morals' on others, are fine by me.
All train compartments smell vaguely of shit. It gets so you don't mind it. That's the worst thing that I can confess. You know how long it took me to get there? A long time. When you die you're going to regret the things you don't do. You think you're queer? I'm going to tell you something: we're all queer. You think you're a thief? So what? You get befuddled by a middle-class morality? Get shut of it. Shut it out. You cheat on your wife? You did it, live with it. You fuck little girls, so be it. There's an absolute morality? Maybe. And then what? If you think there is, go ahead, be that thing. Bad people go to hell? I don't think so. If you think that, act that way. A hell exists on earth? Yes. I won't live in it. That's me.

Abusing could be beating, hitting, torture, manipulation/coercion (when the abused is not mentally capable of understanding their situation), forcing someone to do something against their will, mental abuse... off the top of my head
A Paedophile is someone sexually attracted to children... child I will describe as pre-pubescent (not taking into account mental maturity of pubescent children/teens).
Some interesting responses
I've got an interest in religion simply because there's so many different beliefs and offshoots and it makes me wonder how each one can think theirs is the one true religion.
Your comment about schools and having to follow their moral code...what do you do if it's something you strongly disagree with?

This is not unsimilar to the writings of The Marquis de Sade.
His take was that who is to define sin and morality, and who is to judge you but yourself.
If you feel no remorse for your actions then being incarserated or physically harmed is only an inconvenience not a punishment.
He never did pretty much any of the things he wrote about, but he amused many people by letting them fantisize about the what was possible in a world completely unfetered by morals and remorse.
He sold alot of books...........?
Falling asleep and waking up is not the same as passing out and coming to.

A popular misconception. His work was never promoted during his time, only amongst the few. As contemporary eccentrics tend to be figures of mythological lending...and fetched far more a popular following en mass centuries later. This subjective culling of counter-convention is still true today.

Check out some of the horror stories they have inflicted on some of the poorer African nations.
These pharmaceuticles are using whole villages as guinea pigs to test their wares.
Anyways, back to the OP.
Morals? I've got some.
Principles? I've got loads.
Black diamonds? I shit 'em.
They do the same sort of stuff with weapons too don't they?
Well, with regard to the government/PAD abusing the education system; I work within the system, supporting students to think critically, research each and every issue for themselves and come to their own conclusions. You must remember that around 80% of high school teachers in Bangkok are from the NE, so these teachers obviously teach from their own knowledge rather than just the current government propaganda (though the Onet test is a huge barrier for students from the 'wrong social background').Originally Posted by HollyGoodhead
Within the major universities it's tough because there are so many high-so PADites spurting propaganda and banning students that hold alternative views. But, there are many intelligent teachers that care about the student's future and encourage freedom of thought...
I can honestly say that since the coup, the army/Dems/PAD have directly attacked the education system as a major route to social control; it's truly totalatarian and shameful; more reason for me to stay and work within in.

Until you have food, water, clothing and shelter, all morals are luxuries.

No, until you have food, water, shelter, clothing, 20 baht of gold, a new pick up for papa, 150 rai of land, 20 buffalo, a brand new yamaha mio, 2 houses payed for by farang and 2 million baht in the bank.
That's when morals cease to be luxuries.
