    What do you think?

Well for those of you that do not know I have been in Iraq for a year. I am getting quite bored and I miss my wife terribly. My plan when I came here was to pay off all the bills and save money. Well my bills are not overdue now, but they sure are not gone. You know how things always come up. Well they did. Now a year later I did not accomplish that goal so time to make a new one.
Some of you know I have been trying to get a Electrician job on a Oil Rig but nothing yet. I know I have to do something. I really do not want to go back to the states. With the amount of money I have been making here and no taxes. I am afraid that if I go back to the states I will just be right back here. I would make one third of what I make here after taxes. I would be right back in the poor house.
So I have been thinking about distance learning also know as online classes. What do you guys think about this? I have a lot of time. Of course these programs are not cheap a Bachelors is going to cost somewhere from 30k to 60k U.S. there may be more fees in there. That is one program there are many others with varying prices. I am asking you guys what you think I should. I am also wondering the best program to take that will help me get a better job that pays more and well more time with the wife and family.
    So thanks in advance

With regards to distance learning courses try Heriot-Watt university's courses.

An online degree won't give you the triple salary you have in Iraq that was not sufficient to clear off your debts.
Maybe it is time to think about spending less and clearing these debts before thinking about changing job.
But in the meantime, of course, no harm studying.

Why not get some education on rig safety systems eg fire alarms, cctv systems that sort of thing this would go nicely with your electrical qualifications and you would have more than one string to your bow.

The answer would depend on your age, I assume you are early 30s?

Yep, stick it out for another year or 2, then you'll either have some money saved or be well on your way to a degree.
Distant learning is a good idea, but it seems unrealistically expensive, are you sure those are standard rates, have you compared fees internationally?

You can get distance learning a good deal cheaper than that bigman.
And congratulations on your desire to better your qualifications- I can assure you prospective employers take good note of this.
I know very little about you, so hard to give specific advice.
If you are beyond your mid thirties, give some thought to a vocationally specific qualification. I know for example that offshore rigs have a high demand for occupational health and safety people, and these jobs pay well.

Whatever you do, investing in yourself will always pay off subject only to believing in yourself as well.
It sets you apart from, and puts you ahead of the pack.

That was a price quote from a nationally know school but I can get a 20% discount for being dumb enough for coming to Iraq.

Go work on a ship. Work 3 months and come here for three. I have a friend that does it. He works for Sea Lift Command. He said the pay is pretty good and I guess it gets better with time.

What are salaries like in Iraq? Everyone appears to be heading there but nobody make mention of what the salary ranges are.

I do know from research reports that oil companies are starved for good personnel. Fire your CV off to a bunch and see what comes up.

They tend to mainly hire Americans in Iraq. As for the oil companies they tend to look for people with existing experience in the oil sector.

Screw the degree it's not needed. Seadrill, Transocean, Pride are all hiring from the drilling contracters. They can't get enough people, although as an electrician without offhsore experience you'd likely start at the bottom and take a pay cut. Seadrill in particular have a lot of new build vessels in Korea. Being in the shipyard is an excellent time to learn the rig before it goes on contract.

I forgot to add there are loads of ex armed forces working in the oil industry, if they can make the change then so can you. Keep sending in your resume.
