Thread: Doubts and second thoughts

I'm starting to have doubts about living in Thailand and questioning my motives for even wanting to try it.

This is starting to bug the hell out of me.

Any suggestions on how I get past the jitters I'm starting to feel ?

I think viewing Thailand as an "easy" life where I could live within my means without working was a motive.

I think I also viewed it as a good alternative to Hawaii.

If I back out on Thailand now there are only two other places I would consider. Back to Washington State or stay right here in Japan.

I think I still want to work. And I don't think teaching english is something I'll look forward to in the morning.

Don't you already have a house built somewhere in Thailand though SK?

Not sure what other work opportunities there would be in nakhorn Sawan

Responsibilty is a curse as well ... I took on the responsibilty of my step-daughter and it's starting to creep into my mind that the right thing to do for her education wise is not to take her back to the Thai school system. I guess I could live in BKK, teach English and use the salary to pay for her to go to the International school ... but I think that would wear thin after a while on me. I don't want to be doing that for the next decade I don't think.

TEFLing would'nt cover the annual cost SK

No chance of affording international school fees on a teacers salary sk I 'm afraid.
Some of the private Thai schools in BKK are pretty good and a fraction of the cost.
I think AO is pretty happy with the schooling his kids are getting.

I'm still trying to sort through everything as I get closer and closer to starting my terminal leave in December.

You see, for me by living in either Japan or Washington I don't have to worry about medical care, dental care, education or meaningful work. Not to mention gym facilities. And I don't have to worry about the various types of visas to stay in country.

I'm starting to think the "pluses" really aren't in favor of Thailand in my situation.

It's not an easy thing to figure out at all.

My job and my new little venture afford me a nice lifestyle here.
The work permit certainly validates you and you can start to feel at home.

Medical insurance is cheap here, and I have been impressed with the standard of care, as for dentists, they are way cheaper and top drawer.

There's some decent schools in Nakhon, that are'nt that expensive I think, St Josephs springs to mind.

Edit on that just talking to the misses, she recons St J's is'nt that good any more, but your looking about 20,000 a term boarding and only a couple of thousand if not. My misses recones this place is the best now Rasan Chotrawi (that spelling is probably really bad !!) and around the same price

It would come pretty close and then I'd have to chip in. Don't forget now that I'm talking about using the "entire" english teaching salary to pay for the school.

Last I remember checking the American School In Bangkok is about 400,000 baht per year. I'd hope to hell I could make 30,000 baht a month in BKK and that would mean 360,000 a year to use for school.

If you can stay in Japan, I would definitely recommend to stay there if you can afford it. Get a nice place in the country side and it would be nicer than staying in some shitholes in Thailand

Try it over here for a few months SK, see how it pans out, you may be surprised. CMN is right. There are sonme good schools that are'nt Ints. AO seems happy enough with the kids education.

Here is the other thing fellas ... I'm thinking my problem is that I wanted the "Hawaii" lifestyle as I mentioned ... so I'm starting to think that if I still go foward with Thailand then if I want to be happy also ... and not just worry about my wife and step-daughter then I'm thinking that Huan Hin or Cha'am is more up my alley ... obviously the old lady ain't going to spend much time considering my suggestion to live in Jomtien.

I've got to balance this whole thing out ... everybody's needs and it ain't easy.

I would stay put for the sake of the child. Get her a proper education.
