It would really depend on the job. I'd hate to come here and have to scramble to find a job in order to survive. But, being sent here on some sort of decent expat package would be OK.

That said, I don't even want to think about working right now.

When i do leave for Thailand i will make sure to have interests set up at home so i dont need to work over there. Thirteen more years and i hit 40, oh how time flies. The only other reason to move quickly to Thailand is if i get caught doing something i shouldnt and disappearing to the villages to lay low lol.

I have to agree with that.
I did it before in one very well known Thai company and well, it was not easy.
Even if it was a joint venture.

Will be here until I die.
When I came out here fulltime over 6 years ago it was with the knowledge it would be a one-way ticket. It took me a longtime to make that decision.
In any event i have no place to go back to. This is home.

If due to some unforseen circumstance i am forced out i will move forwards not backwards

People pay thousands of pounds to go mountaineering up Everest. Do you want to live up there?

Furthermore, the UK has more tourists than Thailand who spend more when they are there.

Hence its hardly a good reason to think that staying here is a great idea.

To be honest I have not given it much thought yet and hopefully it will never get to that point.
Most people talk about leaving to "go back home"

    This is my home.

I will wish to stay somewhere in Asia but much would depend upon finances , age , opportunities and challenges etc.
As I say hopefully the situation will not arise.
I spent a lot of time deliberating about the move out here. It was made with permanence in mind

Love the way you phrased the question CMN. So, "deep down" I honestly believe I won't be in Thailand longer than 3 years. But it is possible that I'll eventually go to a kind of 6 on/6 off schedule and spend half of the year over in God's Country ... Washington State.

We'll see ... you might be right. But I've got a great place overlooking Sinclair Inlet with a great view. I miss the place even now.

I just don't think it's going to end up being such a great place to live that I won't still have a strong pull to go back home.

I'm from Ohio and fell in love with both Washington State and Hawaii ... I love both of those places more than Thailand. Thailand for me is just a place to try and see how it turns out.

Die, bankrupt or kicked out. the thought of going back actually scares me a bit.

Living on Everest would have it's pros and cons, little presure but not much atmosphere.

I've always said that I'm only here till my next work permit expires. Not too sure if I could live here on a tourist visa (although these days I could go for the marriage visa option, but I'm not overly happy with the reliance of the "wife" thing for one of those )

EDIT - I should add that for me the consideration has never been whether or not I could live here forever, but whereas I could live. I cannot see my wife agreeing to go and live back in Africa and Europe is not the sort of place I want to live. The hunt goes on.

    on a more serious note
the LoS is not the worst place to be on this planet
but it does have its drawbacks

the important thing is not to become too enamoured and start
romantically fantasizing on how fucking good this place is
in ones own mind, because reality is quite different
from the mindfuck - Peterpan docet - just to place emphasis
    on some recent unpleasantness

    to answer the question:

I'll be here as long as favorable conditions outweigh the shitty ones

there are plenty of neighboring countries, and more further afield, offering what I think is nice to have namely warm weather, cheap living and pussy of not too hysterical predisposition

Moving away has a built in factor of about 1 year disconfort anywhere one might relocate to, its the price one pays to learn the new local ropes, nothing earthshattering all considered

    summing it up

LoS is good ... as long as ... it doesn't start fucking too much
with my life style and peace of mind

just some ideas for plans A..B..C.. etc

Philippines, Cambo, Nam, Burma, Malay, China, S'pore, Indo ... ... ..
the above might not have all that TH "had" to offer but some new localities
compensate for what we might have lost when moving to other
    lands.

lots of reasons for that, but how long can it last?

I've been here going on 6 years and have never left the country, I really don't want to.

I will be here, I think as long as I'm allowed to be here. i don't want to go back to the UK for any reason.

how long do you think you'll be here?
    I don't know.

But going back to living in an American suburb would be very depressing. Very boring.

    Probably but not confirmed yet.

A bar and a mobile brothel

"The ignorance of Chinese authorities for anything but to charge permit fees has led to an over-crowded, lawless and dangerous situation on Everest North side, adding to the risk of the climb itself.

Commercial budget expeditions are signing up clients by the dozen and Base Camp has a bar and a mobile brothel. Individual climbers are robbed in high camps, which this year has contributed to at least one climber's death."

A couple of people I know come out with the "I'm lucky enough to live and be paid where other westerners pay to visit" line. Thats fair enough if it makes getting out of bed in the morning easier. However, I don't see things quite that simply, and I would also not agree with a barman in the UK telling me he is lucky to be paid to be in a pub day in day out when other people have to pay to spend their time there.

You may not agree with other peoples comments Smeg, but that does not make them wrong.

Your ideas and judgements are just that, yours
