Dengue under control by 2011

By: BangkokPost.com Published: 5/06/2009 at 01:38 PM The Public Heath Ministry has set a target to achieve 100 per cent control of dengue fever and prevent it spreading in 29 high-risk provinces by 2011, Deputy Public Health Minister Manit Nop-armonbodi said.
Mr Manit said this year’s control target is 80 per cent.
The 29 provinces at high from dengue are Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi, Rayong, Samut Prakan, Nakhon Nayok, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Samut Sakhon, Buri Ram, Surin, Khon Kaen, Roi-et, Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Sawan, Phichit, Lamphun, Surat Thani, Chumphon, Ranong, Phangnga, Krabi, Songkhla, Narathiwat and Bangkok.
During the first five months ofthis year there were 12,320 cases of dengue fever recorded throughout the country, a 27 per cent drop year on year, and 14 people died.

We crashed a government party at the BITEC centre on Friday and although I thought we would be chucked out at any minute ended up being almost the last to leave. There were local officials from the 76 provinces there and it must have cost about 2 million baht judging by the food and the amount of people sat round the tables. It was a banquet really, and before we finished one drink they put another one down, think we had 20 bottles of beer between three of us. Food was top notch too as was the entertainment, thanks Thai govt, look foward to next years bash. Today were given tickets to an expensive concert at Thai cultural centre, no booze this time but some free posters and cheep CD's. Sometimes Thailand is surprising, well thats my good news this weekend.

Depressed Pattaya Holiday Maker Defies Odds

A Belgian tourist has stunned the popular holiday resort of Pattaya by not throwing himself out of his 12th storey apartment.
Mr. Edwardo Van Hinkerbottom had been approached in the early hours of Sunday morning by a pair of 'gentlemen in dresses'.
After relenting to their charms he later came to in his apartment, sporting nothing but a rather sore ring piece and an empty wallet and safe.



Mr. Hinkerbottom, a first time tourist to the Kingdom, later confessed, " I felt like hurling myself out of the window, but I came to my senses and went downstairs for a cup of coffee"

I would love to know how these twits plan to do this. The Australian government has spent millions on this problem. The latest Australian development is a genetic modification to the mosquito, which only allows it to live for a short time. The "mozzie" does not live long enough to breed.

Ah, but in this respect, Australians have the distinct disadvantage of being wary of using lethal poison that accumulates in the food chain and environment.

Luckily there are no such qualms among the Thai.

Bus Driver Awarded Nobel Peace Prize

A bus driver, local to Khon Khean province has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his service to the local community. The driver, Mr. Thanapak Yabberedup, is expected to claim his award later this year.
In this shock decision, Mr. Yabberedup pipped rivals such as the Dalai Lama and Mother Theresa to the post and couldn't hold back his elation whilst being interviewed, " I'm so happy, I certainly get my passengers to their destination on time. After all, I've got the biggest bastard vehicle on the road. I once ran over a tuk-tuk just to entertain my guests on board, everyone was so happy. I can see why I've been awarded this prize. Right, just off to get fucked up on drugs and alcohol before my next shift starts".

17 killed, 30 injured in bus accident in Krabi

KRABI: -- A chartered bus taking officials of the Samut Prakan Provincial Administrative Organization for field trips overturned here Friday morning, killing 17 and injuring 30 passengers.

The accident occurred at 6:30 am on the Phanom-Khao Tor Road in Ban Bang Hoi village in Tambon Khao Tor of Krabi's Prayphaya district.

Twelve passengers of the bus died at the scene and five more died at hospitals.

Thirty other passengers were injured and rushed to the Krabin and district hospitals nearby.

About 400 officials were travelling in 12 buses. They left Samut Prakan Thursday evening.

Police said the drive of the bus, which overturned, might doze off, causing the accident.

A local woman known as Mystic Dipstick has predicted that this weeks lottery number will probably only be divisible by itself and number 1, with approximately a fifty percent chance it may also be divisible by number 2. The batty old bird has been predicting the lottery twice a month for the last 60 years with complete accuracy. She has failed to be correct on every occasion, but insists that this prediction is spot on, and could someone lend her 100 baht to buy a ticket.

Emergency: Fogging at GH this Friday/5 June and 19/20 June 2009

Dear All,

Regret that we need to conduct a series of foggings again - scheduled this Friday/5 June & on 19/20 June 2009 as there have been 3 (three) neigbours already being hospitalized thus far suffering from DBD/dengue fever. Since we have some saving from the previous foggings, for the 5th June fogging - it will be subsidized and GH neighours are kindly expected to cover the fogging on 19/20 June (date of confirmation will follow). However, should you wish to cover both or pay extra, you are most than welcome - as we may use the fund to also spray the surroundings of GH River Park (behind the walls at the river banks).

2,000 more hospitals in 18 months

By: BangkokPost.com Published: 8/06/2009 at 03:27 PM The Public Health Ministry will upgrade 1,000 tambon health stations to hospital level this year and another 1,000 next year.
This is part of the ministry's four-year (2009-2012) target to upgrade 9,000 out of 9,810 tambon health stations nationwide to hospital standard with the potential to provide medial services and carry out programmes to promote healthy life-styles, prevention of disease, health recovery and enable communities to set up a health system of their own.
This was revealed on Monday by Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai during a meeting of more than 500 medical personnel, including chiefs of provincial and district public health offices, directors of hospitals and chiefs of tambon health stations in 14 northern province at a hotel in Chiang Rai.
Mr Witthaya said the intention of upgrading health stations to hospitals is to enable the people of have access to medical services and reduce the number of sick people.
He said more people are sick with non-contagious diseases such as ischemic heart disease, diabetes and strokes which cause leave them disabled and headed for an early death.
Therefore, the Public Health Ministry has a policy to promote health and reduce the number of sick people. Campaigns will encourage people to stop smoking and drinking alcohol, reduce intake of fat and sugar, eat more vegetables and fruit, and do more exercise, he said.
The 2,000 health stations to be upgraded to hospitals will be provided with 1.2 million baht each to buy necessary equipment and set up a computer system to enable nurses at health stations to seek advice directly from doctors at district hospitals.

As she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of
school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked
at her student named Teddy Stoddard.
Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did
not play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and
that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant.
It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in
marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and then putting
a big 'F' at the top of his papers.

At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each
child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last. However, when
she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.

Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, 'Teddy is a bright child with a ready
laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners... he is a joy to be
around..'

His second grade teacher wrote, 'Teddy is an excellent student, well
liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a
terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle.'

His third grade teacher wrote, 'His mother's death has been hard on him.
He tries to do his best, but his father doesn't show much interest, and
his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken.'

Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, 'Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show
much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and he sometimes
sleeps in class..'

By now , Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of
herself.. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas
presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for
Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that
he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it in the
middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when
she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a
bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume. But she stifled the
children's laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was,
putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist. Teddy
Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, 'Mrs.
Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to.'

After the children left, she cried for at least an hour. On that very
day, she quit teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Instead, she
began to teach children. Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to
Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more
she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year,
Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite
her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one
of her 'teacher's pets..'

A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her
that she was the best teacher he ever had in his whole life.

Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy.. He then wrote
that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still
the best teacher he ever had in life.
Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things
had been tough at times, he'd stayed in school, had stuck with it, and
would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors. He assured
Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he had
ever had in his whole life.

Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he ex
plained that after he got his bachelor's degree, he decided to go a
little further. The letter explained that she was still the best and
favorite teacher he ever had. But now his name was a little longer....
The letter was signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, MD.

The story does not end there. You see, there was yet another letter that
spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be married. He
explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was
wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place
that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom. Of course, Mrs.
Thompson did. And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with
several rhinestones missing. Moreover, she made sure she was wearing the
perfume that Teddy remembered his mother wearing on their last Christmas
together.

They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson's
ear, 'Thank you Mrs. Thompson for believing in me. Thank you so much for
making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference.'

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, 'Teddy,
you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a
difference. I didn't know how to teach until I met you.'

Des Moines that has the Stoddard Cancer Wing.)
