Why do TD Merkins use an Aussie word?

Why is it now fashionable for some of the more rabid of the TD US contingency (no, no-one's looking your way, Tex - you're just being paranoid... ) to use the word 'pom' to describe Brits? I don't get it. Didn't 'Limey' or 'asshole' do it for you guys? Why use an Aussie word?

Am I the only Brit that finds this a bit strange? And sad, actually. To have so little vocabulary in your own language that you have to borrow from Oz is slightly disturbing...

So, would anyone of our transatlantic cousins like to explain why they feel the need to use an Aussie euphemism? Or anyone else have a view?

methinks you have to use a slightly smaller, and less obvious bait than that Miss Rain......

but then again, it is merkin baiting, they might just take it....

    Yeah, something like that.

Pom is a dig at both the individual twat and the lame royal laughingstock that is responsible for allowing the wretched, whining, pussbags to live and serves as their role models.

It suits me, so I use it.

Any number of descriptives are perfectly acceptable.

    Dumbass
    Retard
    Petty
    Insignificant
    Whiner
    Blowhard...

    The list goes on.

edit ... Oops, almost forgot the smiley!

Understand the sentiment. Why that word? Why not one of your American ones, as quoted later?

I had never thought about the word Pom as being derogatory until I accidently called this Scotish bloke called John Donnelly a pom and he hammered me when playing against him in Rugby!

I suffered a black eye and and a bloody nose and he got sent off.

Didn't realize that the Jocks hated the Poms so much!

    Listen, NR.

I'm an American and as such, am free to chose the phrases I like. Thre isn't any established protocol or fussy nanny pushing me toward "rot mouth" or "bell end blower."

It's all open ended, you see.

I'm not bound by the same dozen or so insults that your mind-numbing people cleverly bandy about at everything and everyone that isn't properly Pom.

If there's one you prefer, please feel free to suggest it (yes I know, it's difficult) and I'll summarily dismiss it. Thanks for your interest.

obligatory smiley -- you pick one.

    you will now shorty

"The Welsh have never made any significant contribution to any branch of knowledge, culture or entertainment ... They have no architecture, no gastronomic tradition and, since the Middle Ages, no literature worthy of the name."
There seems to me to be enough truth in this to make it painful for any Welsh person to contemplate. One could add to it. One could say that the Welsh pride themselves on their intense musicality, even though it seems to amount to little more than being able to gather in large numbers and sing music written by foreigners. One could say that their musical sense is only there to compensate for their lack of visual sense and that Wales is, by nature, a magnificent country which has been diminished by almost everything that man has added to the landscape.
The one thing achieved by a cheeky bit of polemic like Wilson's is that it manages to unite the Welsh in a way that nothing else could. I can remember from my childhood in Wales, and I am often told by those who have worked with the Welsh, that the manner in which they scheme, and stab each other in the back, and engage in tribal vendettas, and engage in local corruption where necessary, and squabble generally, is wonderful to behold - certainly, the way in which the north and south of Wales are divided against each other seems to be far fiercer than in Scotland or England.

Being referred to as a Pom by a Septic is right up there with spilling milk, its weak even coming from the Aussies, never mind the Yanks.

Just and for my benefit do the Irish, Welsh and Scots have a special pet name for the poms or do they refer to the poms as poms?

Nope, you're bound by one. Pom. And it's Australian. I have no problem with you or an Aussie using it (I've never thought it particularly derogatory, so you could say a lot worse. I'm sure every Westerner here has been called a lot worse), I'm just wondering why? Do you place some connotation on it that I don't understand? It's really weird coming from someone other than an Aussie. It's like when lower-class white Brit kids start talking in a Jamaican patois, you feel embarrassed for them, y'know?

    Why?

Because posters here are mostly expats. And we expats, live, work, and hangout with people from....Oz.

We take the words we like. I also take expressions from Britain, and I even use them in the USA. And the 'Merkins' find it interesting by the looks on the face, but they usually don't say anything.

And as DD stated, we feel Australians are superior. They have lots of beaches, are not over-populated, and like to drink beer and have fun more often than Americans do.

    I am a converted wannabe:
