Annual Songkran Death Poll - Place your votes

Its that happy time of year again when everybody gets pissed then drives around in pickups trying to kill each other.

Last year it was about 800 people achieved their final wishes and went to the great Buddha in the sky, so how many lucky people will there be this year that make this great fun holiday their last one.

Nope, you will just have to make sure you reverse back over the ones that you knock down, you know it makes sense, think of the hospital bill savings

Seems we have a sponsor for first prize (Thai Coffins, have you made your choice yet?).

^Some nice coffins there. But at the end of the day they get burned. Has anyone ever had to do the "Remaking the body out of banana's" ceremony to the cremated body?

Whose figures are deemed official for these purposes? The ones published in the Bangkok Post? Those only count deaths of Thai's between the ages of 8 and 58 who were driving or passenger on a Japanese manufactured motor vehicle between 8am and 8.45am on 12 to 15 April whist wearing a blue baseball cap and carrying at least 3 chickens.
Scotland is wet and dreary. Don't let anybody tell you different. Even the hills are mostly just big mounds, not proper mountains like the Alps or the Rockies. People will tell you it's all romantic and rugged but I've yet to see the evidence. Even when it's nice it's covered in a cloud of these bastard little insects called midges so you have to stay inside anyway. Plus it's ful of Scots. Case rested

Sodding fix!!!! It's not a public poll, so no-one can see what you actually voted for. Therefore, even if you win, I suspect DD will declare the vote null & void and appropriate winnings for the 'Beef Sandwich Fund' or ' Pole dancers of Pattaya' or even 'Songkran wet t-shirt contest winner night out with DD'. Huuuummmmpppph!! BTW, my vote was 999.

I think this years annual cull will yield 876 bodies unless "shitloads" is a number.

I saw 3 or 4 emergency vehicles speed off to a little village outside Udon yesterday evening. Looks like the fun has started here too!

95 killed, 992 injured so far in Songkran road accidents

    Published on April 13, 2009

A total of 930 road accidents occurred during the first two days of this year's Songkran holiday, killing 95 people and injuring 992 others, the Road Safety Centre announced yesterday.

The Ministry of Transport' s deputy permanent secretary, Tawanrath Onnsiri, said the Interior Ministry's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, announced figures from the first days of the sevenday road accident monitoring period.

Drink driving and excessive speeding were the main causes of road accidents, he said.

The road accident on Saturday was 205 less than last year, with 272 fewer injuries, but the number of deaths was equal with 59.

The accidents were most frequent between 4pm and 8pm during the first two days of the holiday, taking place mainly on direct roads, especially in villages.

Nakhon Si Thammarat and Buriram had the highest accident toll at 27 each and the highest injuries toll at 26 each. Nakhon Ratchisima hadd the highest death toll at five.

The 3,028 checkpoints on main roads and highways stopped 716,317 vehicles and arrested 218,276 people, 18,232 for driving without a licence and 17,638 for not wearing a helmet, he said.

Tawanrath said however, he has ordered police and excise officials to strictly control the sale of alcohol from 11am to 2pm and 5pm to midnight. The sale of alcohol is prohibited for young people under the age of 20. Violators will face a fine of Bt 20,000 and imprisonment for one year.
