The only time I have really feared for my life and during the riots about 7 years ago and I caught scabbies from an Indonesian woman.

Not a happy hunting ground for me and most of Jakarta is a shithole!

Having said that I would like to visit other parts of Indonesia particularly after seeing KW's picture threads.

MrsKW is Chinese, she and her siblings was locked in her house by her parents, fearful of her life, the Riots were specifically targeting chinese businesses to burn and loot, there was talk of many chinese girls being raped and murdered.

you out to! There's loads to see., but the infrastructure is not really as well set up as you may be used to in THailand.

The current rising wave/power of fundamentalists muslims in ALL of indonesia are causing problems.

a) Violence, such as the example of the violent muslim group that bashed a nonviolent muslim group at the national monumnent last year, because they were "bad muslims" protesting for peace.

B) New repressive Laws such as the recenet pornography law, that bans anything that might arouse a man's lust, including bikinis and tradtional dances.

c) political parties, all the political parties are trying to appeal to the muslim vote, membership of their parties is changing to reflect this, the government works that they propose, even the banking system is trying to get in on the act.

Then I might be more inclined to agree with you...

I've known a few expats who have moved to Bangkok after being based in Jakarta - and prefer Jakarta. These people make good money, and generally say the standard of living is better but it costs much less than BKK..

to be honest, I'm not certain I would agree with either comment there mate, perhaps its changed slightly since, I do think BKK has improved in many ways in the last 10 years, but JKT has stagnated slightly.
