The naive Yank should never pound his chest and talk about John Wayne, Chuck Norris, Pee Wee Herman (for Butterfly) at all when overseas - especially after 9/11. They either do learn 'the ropes' or they don't in which case they scuttle on back to the states telling their friends how cynical, decedent and just plain strange those foreigners are. Especially those Europeans who will drink them under the table in a NY milisecond!

Aww, come on you lot. Let's let the man/boy/Galt have a chance...you've destroyed this thread already.

I was hoping for the wee snap to enlighten us all here, do your best to encourage him back here to the right thread!

Okay Kids, Check your bias at the door and have a seat. If you have the courage to ask real questions I will make it a point to answer anything you want. The stupid insults and childish "cnut" and "American twat" is hardly worth anyones time. Honest and open discussion is fine with me.

I believe these were all valid questions that you have yet to answer. Awaiting your reply.

Okay, Vietnam. After WWII the French were in control Of Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh was in the North and basically put out for the highest bid in terms of support, He got it from the Chinese, How multi national forces had just fought in Korea. Thanks to Macarthur and later Ridgway we stopped them at the 39th parallel. As it remains today. So in the Wests effort to stem Communism during the Cold War, The West took the side of South Vietnam. Including many Countries, Primarily the U.S. and Australia. We tried a war of non-aggression which was a huge mistake. We tried the same stalemate strategy that worked in Korea. Unfortunately for Mcnamara and Westmoreland, They didn't notice that Vietnam wasn't a peninsula like Korea and the Viet Cong and NVA simply moved freely through Cambodia and Laos. The French bailed (There's a shocker) and eventually the idiot liberals started whining here because they suddenly realized that war is not "Fun". The Democrats here cut of funding the war and gave President Ford one month to pull out all the troops in one month. Thus the fall of Saigon and the eventual "killing fields" Which cost over a million civilian lives. We shouldn't have quit, but that's hindsight for all the peace mongers who are directly responsible for those deaths. Don't go to war if you don't mean business and win or die.

In case you haven't noticed we and the dozens of Countries in the fight with us ARE winning the war on terror. We can talk about that later if you're interested.

This is typical of the historic perspective you'll find in the States. Troubling, yes?

So what is inaccurate? It's easy to say, but you're pretty thin on facts or rebuttals. Or you don't know and are embarrassed to admit it.

Hmm, win or die? You were beaten, so you did neither.

You are a proud American who supports America's decision on the battles it chooses, but you seem to disagree with the decisions made by the powers that govern you and your armies. Seems a little odd

Do you vote? Who did you vote for in the last 2 elections?

I thought it ended under Nixon, not Ford ? mostly after the "Pentagon files" were released to the public ? that was of course when the US was already losing the war

notice the similarities with the current Iraq mess

Nixon had just resigned. We weren't losing, we never gave up a mile of terrain until the withdrawal. Which as I said was a huge mistake. Have you noticed Iraq is a success. Or do you just want to believe it's not?

    Not all of the West.

So, why were you meddling in the affairs of a foreign country that was no threat to American national security?

The Vietcong controlled the countryside, the US the big cities and firebases. Peace was made "officially" under president Nixon in Paris in 1973.

It was an unwinable war for the Americans. They thought they were fighting communism, when, in reality, they were fighting an independence movement that just happened to be communist.
If the forerunners to the CIA, the OSS had kept their word to Ho Chi Minh after WW II about giving Vietnam its independence (in return for fighting the occupying Japanese), there wouldn't have been a war, but, the French marched back in with the USA's blessing.

I always vote. Marmite, Iraq was no threat? They lost the war, signed an unconditional surrender and constantly violated it for 12 years. Do you think the World is a better place without Saddam and his two crazy sons. President Bush said we will go after terroists and nations that harbor them, Certainly you know Saddam paid $20,000 to the families of palistinian suicide bombers to kill Jews and used Chemical gas to kill 10,000 Kurds.

We told the South Vietnamese that if they held their ground we would support them. It was not a war of aggression because we sought none of the north. We broke our word to the south and millions died. Big mistake.
