RIP Hana -- beware of palm tree seeds

    My dog died this afternoon.

She was quiet and had no appetite when we came home from Chiang Mai on Jan 5.

My BIL, who was watching the dogs while we were gone, said she was eating something near a palm tree and vomited the next day.

We took her to the vet three times this week and he administered an IV each time. But she still wouldn't eat. Her breathing became labored this morning and she walked out onto the lawn, laid down and died.

The vet mentioned palm trees as a possible culprit before we told him what the BIL observed. The palms are dropping seeds now. They're all over the ground.

I had no idea those trees are poisonous. My wife and I are crushed. We buried her in a field near our house.

Sago Palm : This Plant Will Kill Your Dog (and maybe your kids)

Hana was eight-years-old. A good, obedient dog who traveled the world with us. She wasn't a full-breed and not particularly beautiful, but we loved her. We got her from a dog shelter in Japan when she was one. I miss her terribly.

Awww, that's such awfully sad news, Tex. My heart goes out to you and the fam. Been through it too many times in Thailand and it just rips your heart out every bladdy time. Well, she's gone the Rainbow Bridge and she'll be waiting for you, even if it takes 50 years for you to cross over. RIP, Hana, the beautiful flower.

Sorry to hear of your loss.
From the picture looks like a lovely companion .

Just getting over one myself and know what you are feeling believe me.
Ok mine was a bird ( a wild one that I raised from a little thing that had fallen from the nest)but he was my chum for 5 years and lived on top of my computer and would sit on my shoulder when I went to the local minimart, went with me when I took my cats for their evening walk and act as a sheepdog for them.
The house is so quiet now and I don't like it .
( Pics in My gallery if you are interested )

    Time will heal .

Really sorry to hear that Tex. Take some comfort in the fact that she has gone to a better place and, if you believe in it, she will be waiting for you when you get there. My condolences to you you both, may she rest in peace.

I'm sorry to hear that bro, losing a dog is never easy, and an unexpected lose is even harder.

I've never heard of palm seeds being poisonous, a good warning for the rest of us. (Unless, is there any chance she picked up some poison meat?)

    Answer

Some species of palm trees are poisonous. The fruit like substance that surround the seeds of certain species can be toxic. For Example: FoxTail palm seed resemble a peach when they are rype and ready. The fruit like substance is indeed poisonous and can be deadly to dogs.

To lose a friend at any time is difficult but when it comes to a family member it is especially harrowing.

My dogs seem to eat those palm seeds all the time and not have a problem so possibly a snake bite or something else.

    Anyway chin up mate!

Immature {or uncooked} Sago can be deadly. Sago, grown largely throughout Melanesia, PNG, and SE Asia is widely used as a staple food as the fruit and parts of the stock can be consumed after certain preperation and cooking procedures. Even at a muture stage, if not treated correctly, this palm can very poisonous.

Shame about that Tex, the one drawback about dogs is youre most likely to outlive them. Our family dog died when he was 14, they end up being a big part of your life, the all listening non judgemental friend.
