^ I know mate but I would really like to get something bigger and heavier so I can relax a bit.

Never know I might even join the Jesters MC, get some Tatts and grow a ponytail.

As a matter of fact I saw a mega trials bike on display but from experience they are not so good for comfortable touring.

    I disagree.

I got my first trail bike when I got my first ever licence at 17yo....1 week later I left home and rode from Melbourne to Cooktown....around 3 to 4000 clicks I think. You can also throw it in the pickup and go away and have some weekend fun up the mountains....find a little long neck girl...all lonely and lookin for a lonely long pronged foreigner.
I like poisoning my neighbours dogs till they die cos I'm a cnut

Not necessarily that bike but for that amount of cash you could get a nice CB 400, enough poke to get around plus a decent riding position for traffic. Those Phantom things make you sit too low to the floor.

We have been thinking the same thing DD and are seriously considering moving down to Trad. The only thing holding us up is the schooling for the kids.

There is 2 Rai of our land overlooking Koh Chang and ready to be built on.

Great place to have a bike as well.

I believe that the Phantoms here are assembled in Thailand
In Taiwan I have a 12 year old Kymco Zing- identical to the Phantom ( but 150cc and made/assembled in Taiwan )
Bought it new and used it daily for 3 years on a 10km commute with absolutely no problem. When I left the island I gave it to my ladies brother and he has used it ever since on a daily 30 km commute.
When I go back there he gives me it back and it still runs as good as new 160,000 km on the clock now and with regular service only had the gear selector, piston rings and cam chain replaced engine wise. Paintwork has faded a bit and all the "chrome" plating on the plastic parts is long gone.
Have had bikes of all sizes for 50 bloody years now and without doubt the Zing is/was the best ever as long as you didn't want to do a Valentino Rossi to the shops and back !!
If the Thai built Phantom is the same quality and you just want to potter around I would go for it !!

I'm with Fat boy on this one as I've toured all through the North of Thailand on a Honda 250 trail bike a few times.

Nice reliable 4 stroke but if I was you and were thinking of going this way I'd get something with a larger motor 400 up, great thing with these bikes is that you can get off road which is a huge bonus up there plus the larger bikes are great to tour on.

Thing is, your not riding all day as one just wants to cruise along, why go a thumping huge road bike ?

Anyway every body to there own gig but I like to tour slowly and stop often so I can foking check things out, thats why I tour, its not a friggin race.

Shit so much good and sensible advice I am now slightly confused.

Sorry fellas if I don't respond immediately as all this worthwhile food for thought deserves proper evaluation. Thanks again.

In the meantime the trail bike gig will probably require that I go back into the gym, lose about 5 kgs and find a time machine that can get me back to about 40 years old.

When I was young I rode trail bikes and at about 20 I brought a Kawasaki 900 and what a beast that was.

At that same time I lost a very dear friend of mine who was actually racing professionally on the touring bike circuit and when he was looking at winning some races had his life cut short by a drunken driver.

Never sat on a big bike again but now is the time to put those demons to bed.
