    Mosquito Prevention?

anyone out there have any tips for mosquito deterrent?
i swear i attract the fuckers! just this morning i killed 4 before my morning coffee. they feast on me where ever i am. i live on the 13th floor and don't have any stagnant pools of water on my balcony or anywhere else. i do have plants but i'm pretty careful about how much water pools at the bottom.
it's sounds pretty stupid but i can't seem to prevent the cnuts from getting at me. have the blue light zapper....it's crap, mosquitoes avoid it. have the electric racket, works ok if you can see them. sprays, lotions, done it all!
maybe i need to get a mosquito eating animal as a pet

surely someone else living here is being ravaged by these relentless bastards?

The trick is to pretend youre Thai, they dont come near you then.

The most effective was/is mozzie screens, a friend of mine lived on the 23rd floor and they still got up to him when he had his balcony door open, put a screen up and problem solved. Failing that it sounds like theyve got a taste for your blood that only a complete blodd transfusion could cure. One of the annoyances of being a farang here that you have to put up with.

No not stupid at all. Everyone is effected by these little bastards every now and again. It's not so much that they're attracted to you moreso, but you probably tend to be more sensitive. If you might be newer to a tropical climate{s}, than acclimation will be your best friend. I've come to the long accustom comfort zone regarding these buggers. Even folks that live in misquito ridden areas are at times bothered. It's just dealing with it. You could use and apply all the lotions, sprays, electric devices, chemically laddened coils, and whatnot - you're still going to have them....might consider any sources around you to act for prevention. Important that you have a decent manner of protection when you sleep - very distracting! Right now {this season} should be your relief. They only become nastier {and different} come the first rains and thereafter. You could always try to ingest something that might repell them through your odor, etc. There is pure pig fat, rubbed liberally on those areas. But it stinks.....hope someone else can suggest any remedies to help. Best of luck.

    melvbot,
unfortunately for me my apartment windows don't have screens or a track to fit framed screens, maybe i'll have to modify and customize

    rural,
7 years of acclimatization and nothing! heehhe. i'm pretty sure i have a slight allergic reaction to them as i can be dead asleep and be woken up by a bite.
i thought this was a 'low mozzy' season but lately it's been pretty insane.

it's a losing battle. greatly out numbered by enemy troops and their air superiority is defistating!

Anything with a high DEET content is good, but it may give you cancer or two heads or something similar.

I use these to keep away the sandflies and mozzies when fishing up mangrove areas

(piss) OFF............................. Available in most Oz grocery stores

    And even more nasty is

Bushmans........................... May have to hunt a bit for it, most camping stores will stock it

Yeah, 7 years is long enough. Don't know what to say. You must be very sensitive - must be worse in the evening, huh? I could understand how frustrating it could get. You have my empathies.....

I would agree living in a two story house the amount of mozzies I get 10 feet up is minimul compared to on the ground and in a 3rd floor unit we had had none, so maybe there is water lying around somewhere.

    Neighbouring balconies, air conditioners perhaps?

Whats it like on the ground at dusk, if you get them on the 13th floor they must suck you dry in seconds on the ground

i'm fully deeted up! have to do a spray before i go to bed usually and hey lay in wait for it to wear off i'm sure of it. my gf will be laying right next to and they don't even go near her??? she must stink or something. or maybe it's the glowing white skin that acts as a beacon

maybe a mixture of solutions; screens, deet, transfusion, pig fat and sleeping pills

Your gf was born into it. I believe an intensity of consciousness might not be an ally. Easier said than done......just ignore 'em. Transcend the pain elsewhere.

This is the best mozzie spray I've found. It smells nice too, not like normal deet. Its now available at tesco in an orange can.

    lemongrass oil
    bamboo oil
When I am on the farm we take the stalks/leaves of lemon grass and place them on a fire in the evening
The smoke repels the mosies and other insects
Caveaton't sit too close to the fire!

I guess I fit into that fortunate class - never been terribly bothered. And I've lived countryside {higher density} all this while......there is a brief seasonal exception, that I've noticed even Thais are affected - those nasty liitle dive-bomber types that have a brief existance during the first month of rainy season. Anyone familiar with these 'special' mossies {I know they differ from region}??

They tend to love cardboard boxes, avoid keeping such, replace by plastic containers with cover. Same for bags, keep close.

Flower pots are as well nice breeding areas...

Get a mossie net for the bed, they can come in very stylish designs these days and make the bed look very romantic and elegant...or if you dont like elegant...slutty.

Also if you are ok to use spray often, go to Tops supermarket and buy a spray made from lemon grass. I use it all the time here at my house and lotsa mossies at times. Also use on my kids whenever they are outside. No chemicals and works very well.
I like poisoning my neighbours dogs till they die cos I'm a cnut

all good suggestions, thanks loads. think i need to lay off the deet stuff though
then do a thorough sweep of adjacent balconies for breeding grounds, i'm sure one of my jackass neighbors has got one of those lotus plant water bowls/mosquito farm :-)

lemongrass the whole balcony!!!! the battle continues!

There are two types of lemon grass see the above, post #126. If you have the proper kind you can crush the leaves (roll between palms stringently and rub the leaves on your skin) or put in a dish of warm water and place BEHIND a fan. BEHIND the fan also works well for mozzie coils.
