The game was called off on account of the weather

The game was called OFF on account OF the weather.

Let's examine two important words in this sentence.

    1. OFF -- it's the opposite of on. Notice it contains two "f"s.
    2. OF -- it's a preposition, usually means belonging to, made from, or containing. Notice it contains only one "f". This subtle distinction gives each word a unique meaning.

    Let's practice:

The plane full OF passengers took OFF.
    excellent -- one more...

Hey! You! Get OFF OF my cloud.
    wonderful.

I'm not a teacher or a particularly good speller. But I think I learned this tricky little two-/three-letter wonder in either first or second grade. Yes, that's somewhere between 5- and 7-years-old. It's not tricky like icicle or long like the common shampoo ingredient methochloroisothiazolinone. It's two or three letters. And one of them is repeated.

I see it misspelled here almost every day. It's not a typo and it's not just laziness or reluctant editing. It's consistent, repeatable and verifiable. For some reason, its correct spelling eludes many TD members. Hopefully, if you were one of them, you're now cured.

    400 baht please.

(fully expect to be told to sod of)

^^ No, as I stated in the OP above, I'm not a great speller. If you'd like to discuss the difference between the words I and IS, however, I'm game.

so true yet somehow he thinks he's the board pedant tefl'r when it comes to spelling pointing out everyone else's typos or misspells as if he has never had any or is not in the top 10 of all abusers..
though when it's pointed out to him he's just doing it to be funny..

Tex since you're on a roll, could you lay clarity to the difference between 'too' and 'to' also please?

^ Yes, I can handle that one.

I am going TO address this common spelling mistake TOO.

    1. TOO -- means also, besides or beyond what is desirable, proper or right, more than enough.

    Examples:
He's an idiot, too. (he's also an idiot)
It's too difficult for some to understand. (beyond comprehension)

All other cases use TO unless you're trying to describe a number between one and three.

480 baht please (extra TWO was added TO the total, TOO)

    pedant teflr? really?

any time i have pointed out anyone elses mistakes, its been with an enourmous amoutn of tongue in cheek flippancy.

I'm prolly one of the worstest spellers on the board, in fact take pains to spel it wrong sometimes, cos i aint a teflr and i really dont give a fook about it all......

have I hit a nerve with regardless to your education them, or summtink?

someone better requote this for him to read

or perhaps he'll 'just happen to notice it' when he reads all the threads before he logs in...

Whilst we have your attention, would you mind addressing than and then, there, their, and they're, how 'is' follows 'I' and the correct format of a proper sentence using the word and five and possibly also six times in a row, as in and and and and and and?

only yanks use this ridiculous expression...the rest of the world understands the meaning without the preposition...
"Oi, git offa me cloud, ya fookin kant!" You mean something like that? Well, yeah.

Mr Jagger and Mr Richards agree with me.

    (M. Jagger/K. Richards) I live in an apartment on the ninety-ninth floor of my block
And I sit at home looking out the window
    Imagining the world has stopped
Then in flies a guy who's all dressed up like a Union Jack
And says, I've won five pounds if I have his kind of detergent pack
I said, Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
    Don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd
    On my cloud, baby
