Just who are the farang "experts" on Thai culture then?

    Well, what is an expert?

The guys who get themselves a "rich" businesswoman girlfriend and become obsessed that they have cracked Thai women just because they don't have to pay for having sex? They get driven around like some scrub / male whore from the Bed Supperclub to Q Bar and hang out with other similar types and Thai males who have nothing really that interesting to talk about other than their status and car?

The long term teachers who wear yellow shirts on mondays and still live in one room "studios" in Victory Monument after seven years and think that they know the full story on the monarchy and government because they have nothing better to do and no real friends cos they are as dull as dishwater? And, I'll add, too unattractive to find any girlfriend of any kind.

What about the continually complaining Americans who see a scam in every transaction they do with a local? Do they really expect to be charged 7 Baht for a motorsai taxi ride and haggle over the 3 Baht? These types will then tell every other farang in earshot how they hate being scammed by the Thais and are thinking of going to China. Yeah good luck to you there.

Or why not just live your life and go with the flow? Me personally, I've always had the meter turned on in taxis, been charged the local rate on bikes and at street food stalls, always found a decent f**k and never been stolen from by a dirtbag hoe.

We'll be giving a motivational speech together at a venue to announced shortly.

We'll also make sure the place has adequate toilet facilities as I don't wanna be urinating on the street again !

Not many foreigners are able to understand the complexities of Thai culture. Many don't even grasp the simple nuances.

Reading Thai literature written by Thais is the best insight you will get, especially books and articles that are not afraid to be critical, which is necessary in order to achieve a balanced perspective.

Very well said, Tud. In the forlorn hope that some people on here might actually want to read Thai literature here are some links to complete translations of some of the greatest works of 20th Century Thai literature;Short stories

Foreigners will never "get it" if they are consciously ingrained towards a superiority role.

Not to diparage the above suggestion, but to even begin to understand Thai culture some of the following experiences are necessary: 1.) being immersed in a Thai family (e.g. married to a Thai) 2.) living in a Thai neighborhood, preferably in the provinces 3.) speaking enough Thai to at least engage in simple conversation and 4.) working for a Thai organization.

    1. Many farangs who marry Thais still get the wool pulled over their eyes.

    2. Couldn't think of anything worse.

    3. Ditto above, what kinds of conversation would you engage in?

    4. Teaching in a government school? Bloody hell.

Congratulations. You must be very proud. So what's the prize for that, then? A gallantry medal? A Nobel peace prize? A Darwin Award?

I am indeed very proud of that fantastic achievement and maybe a knighthood would be in the offing at some point for my added expertise on anal sex too.

Thanks for that I will start tomorrow, seriously. We don't have many/any bookshops out here and they certainly won't carry any translations. Big thanks.

I know enough about Thai culture not to put my feet on the table, not lose my temper and wai my elders. I'm not really that interested in the history, I read The Nation during my shake break at the gym, I don't shag girls in my neighborhood and I'm polite and avoid trouble.

I'm just here because it's nice and warm, I know the place well and have many friends here, that's all there is too it.

My advice: Just keep movin' straight ahead. Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."
