New book on Prem details his private and personal life
A new book on the private and public life of Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda, which concentrates on political events leading up to and after the Sept 19, 2006 coup, has been released by Post Books, part of Post Publishing Plc, which publishes the Bangkok Post.
The 334-page book, titled The Immortality of Pa Prem: From the Sept 19 coup to the end of Thaksin, was written by Wassana Nanuam, the Bangkok Post's reporter on the military beat.
The author said the book is a must read, not only for Gen Prem's admirers, but also for his critics to gain a better understanding of Gen Prem.
The author provides an insight into the personality and the thinking of Gen Prem and explains why he remains a respected figure in Thai society.
She tries to answer his critics, who linked Gen Prem to the 2006 military coup which toppled the Thaksin Shinawatra government despite the fact that Gen Prem was known to be opposed to coups because when he was prime minister, a few unsuccessful coups were staged as attempts were made to seize power from his government.
The book offers snapshots of the personal and lighter aspects of his life, informing readers of his life as a young cavalry officer, his favourite food and how he manages to maintain a sharp mind and remains in excellent health, even though he is almost 89 years old now.
His admirers will learn that Gen Prem loves singing and spends his free time practising his singing with a piano or a karaoke machine.
Gen Prem is also an avid writer of songs, having composed more than 70. Most are either patriotic songs or love songs.
