I know a different reason for the pinky.

Chinese will tell you that having the pinky as long as the top joint of the ring finger will bring you luck.
Those whose pinky isn't long enough grow their nail to do the job and 'cheat' lady luck.

(And yes, it does seem to make a good digging tool)
