    No more work!!

I've recently (about two weeks ago) said fair well to teaching... possibly forever. I'm in the position where with prudent planning and fairly modest living I could live out my days here working again. If I moved three stops south I could live the tropical beach and palm tree dream of all the working slugs in the UK. But even after two weeks boredom has started... to awaken sleeping habits (17 hrs yesterday) Does the devil truely find work for idle hands or will slowing things down at 27 be the perfect way to live a happy, healthy, life?

They champion falsehood, support the butcher against the victim, the oppressor against the innocent child. May God mete them the punishment they deserve

You will need something to keep your mind active.
Do you have any hobbies that can keep you going for 50 years ?

Your title & OP are asking different things (IMO anyway)

Do you need a vocation in life? No.

Can you stay idle & do nothing? Some can, some can't, but one question has very little (if anything) to do with the other

Ive just finished a website, was working on it all day every day for 2 weeks solid. "aaah finished" Ive had 2 days off now Im bored senseless. Im starting again tomorrow. Sitting around doing nothing all day is simply that, doing nothing. A waste of life.

To be honest, I have done 3 years straight doing nothing. I am bored out of my skull, but not sure what to do.

I think my life should consist of more than waking up, reading the news, reading and posting on Teakdoor, then having my tea. Then going to the gym for a couple of hours and then lunch. Then coming home and reading and posting on Teakdoor and then dinner. After that we catch a movie or go out for the evening. After that Teakdoor again and finally it is off tho bed only to wake up and do the same old same old.

So what are my options? Go back to Chicago and punch a clock? No.

Open a cafe in Bangkok? No.

    Teach English? No.

Any suggestions from you TD members?????

Jump in your car and head for a new province every chance you get. No schedule, no hurry, no hotel reservations. Play it by ear. Errr.....avoid large groups of monkeys.

He could start heavy drinking than it won't be 50 years.

In fact that seems what a lot of those idle expat seem to do, drink as much to kill themselves before their money is running out.

I should go back to Chicago if I were you. Sounds like it may well be your kinda town.

Trouble is sport, you aren't exactly an intellectual are you?

Artisans, like most women, need to be occupied lest they become distracted.

Back to the Windy City if I were you.

Anyways, you know you miss all those steaks.

IMO, you have to find a new focus in life if you want to stay sane.

Move outta BKK. Find some work you can do online to avoid immigration hassles. You'll be alright, Chi!

This happened to me 8 years ago,
So now I work whenever I feel the need to do something.
Teaching is a drag sometimes but does keep you occupied.

I was the same. You've got to do something or you'll go insane. I found that I didn't have enough discipline to work for myself, so I had to work for somebody. If you find the right job, you'll be as happy as Larry.

Or, get yourself a mia noi or 3.

You seem to fairly switched on to food. Lots of potential of producing products that don't involve retail facilities. Working on one now, not pressing but tinkering with a product that "seems" to be well liked. Gotta find out if it freezes well, this weekends project. If it does then might check out commercialization.

    Keeps me in touch lol

I quit work when I was 43, and moved back to Australia from HK. I'm now 48, living near Pattaya and have not worked since. Life ambles on, pleasantly enough.

My situation is a bit like Chi's- to Do, or not to Do? Sometimes I get bored, sometimes I think I should be doing something 'productive'- but What? I certainly don't want to go back to my old frenetic lefestyle in the investment business in some financial centre. Maybe the Internet is a curse in a way- if it wasn't for that, I'm sure I'd have bored myself back to work by now.

MD, I reckon take a few months or even year or so off, then go back to work again. I did the same myself a couple of times. Never any harm in getting some more money behind you, and really in the period from your late 20's til early 40's you are at your most productive.
