I wonder how the Korat bash is going?

Whilst crusing down the Chaeng Wattana highway tonight (as a passenger in a taxi I suppose I should add) I rang Mtd to ask if I was missing anything and there was a lot of noise and drunken incomprehension and the voice I could hear was not Marmers.

Above the music and shouting the voice introduced himself as Dalton, and everybody seemed very happy. He promised a report but I won't be expecting it anytime soon.
"I'm an outsider by choice, but not truly. It's the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out. I'd rather be in, in a good system. That's where my discontent comes from: being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin' straight ahead. Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

^ We can send men to the Moon, so why can't we have a live videofeed (or blog, at least) from the bash?

^Well, Ms. B was all ready to drop me at The Mall, but I chickened out at the last moment and decided to just stay home.

You can't imagine how terrifying the whole thing had become.

^She knows me pretty well. We're both pretty much loners so my social phobias don't have any effect on our lives.

except the never going out to meet people thing.

having said that, don't think I'd want to be anywhere that Dalton was.

We're just not in to that sort of thing. The only time we've ever been out with another couple is when MtD and GoW came to town last year. (Are they still together, BTW?)

I just dropped Ms. B off to have lunch with a friend. This is the first time I've ever known her to go out with a friend in the five years I've known her.

    We're not social animals.

If I called you up one day and say 'G'day Michael, I am in Korat this evening, would you and your wife like to come out for dinner with my family or if you aren't keen to come out and we please bring dinner and the wine over to you, what do you think you would say?

I generally don't answer the phone. This is primarily to avoid terrifying social situations of the type you've just described.

    Haha, good answer BH.

I know I am being rude, I guess I just don't understand what it is you feel around these situations.

I don't understand it either. All I know is that ever since the Korat meet was announced I've been worrying about it; wanting to go, but feeling quite fearful about it at the same time. I guess the bottom line is that I've never really felt like I have much in common with the people I happen to meet. My politics, my choices of entertainment, the way I spend my time, even my choice of computer all seem at odds with what other people feel and do. It seems like in an actual meeting all that would rear its ugly head and make for an unpleasant encounter. Plus, I'm very shy and can rarely think of anything to say in an in-person situation.

I have absolutely no trouble meeting women. It's men against whom I compare myself unfavorably.

In a group meeting like the Korat one you can easily avoid the one on one conversation you seem to fear.

I am assuming that there must be a few times that you have actually turned up to a gathering like the one being discussed. After the first few minutes did you relax and have a good time?

Even though I am not as bad as you are and most people don't believe me when I tell them but I hate going out as well. I hate meeting new people usually will do what I can to avoid it. However when it does happen 90% of the time I end up having a great time. This is what I now remind myself before meeting people and I must admit it is getting easier.

Does Apple know about this effect that Macs have???

Easy solution, buy a cheap/used PC laptop; use it as a doorstop if needed. Problem solved!
