    Thai Animals

during an idle moment yesterday I started wondering whether Thailand has hedgehogs. Yes, it was a very idle moment. Anyway they do, and the hedgehogs are cute.

Then I got to thinking. We have members who have been here a long while, and a good spread over the country, so what animals have you seen? Weird stuff, cute stuff, animals doing weird stuff.

    Here's the Thai hedgehog website:

    Hedgehog, à¹€à¸¡à¹ˆà ¸™à¹à¸„à¸&#163 ;ะ, hedgehogs, exotic pet, สัต& #224;¸§à¹Œà¹€à& #184;¥à¸µà¹‰à&# 184;¢à¸‡ - Home

The best creature I've seen close up was one of these fellas:

He went for a stroll around my old mooban. Apparently he was caught, cooked and sold for ThB 100.

    The Thai hairy-nosed Otter

The hairy-nosed otter (Lutra sumatrana) is one of the rarest otter species on earth, and was thought to be extinct in 1998 as there had been no sightings for many years, but a tiny number of populations have been rediscovered since then.

At present, it is believed to live mainly in two nature reserves in Vietnam, Toa Daeng peat swamp forest in southern Thailand, and in Sumatra, the place for which it was named. It was rediscovered in 2005. It was also rediscovered in Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia. Even from these places, they are known from a tiny number of sightings and some roadkill, and from skins.

A large variety of birds can be spotted without many effort in Thailand (about 950 species).

One of my favourite and also very common found everywhere is the Common Myna.

I love pangolins, like smooth armadillos.

Modern "road kill" recipe for Hedgehog spaghetti carbonara (serves four)
500g spaghetti, 30ml olive oil, 250g lean hedgehog, 1 medium onion (chopped), 125ml water, 60ml dry white wine, 4 eggs, 60ml double cream, 100g grated parmesan cheese
    • chop hedgehog into small chunks
    • beat eggs and cream together in a bowl. Add half the parmesan cheese
    • put pasta in boiling water
    • put onions and hedgehog chunks in pan with olive oil on medium heat until onions are almost clear
    • add wine and reduce heat
    • drain pasta when cooked, combine it with egg, cream and cheese mix
    • add meat, onions and wine without draining fat and mix thoroughly
    • garnish with remaining parmesan
    • serve immediately

Thormaturge, did you read that website? It's not wild hedgehogs - they're breeding them as bloomin' pets! Having seen how people often 'take care' of those squirrelly chipmunk things they have as pets, I don't hold out much hope that the poor things have a good life.

I love so many of the animals here, esp the lizards, those pointy nosed squirrels, the birds & even the snakes. And, of course, the hiiyaas

Or just bake em in clay like the Pikies!

    ^^

I must confess I didn't read the site, this is my busiest month of the year. I was just pleased to see Thailand has hedgehogs; the idea of Thais keeping them as pets is awful. Thais shouldn't even keep fish let alone mammals.
