Well, you have told us what you think about this question:

    1. What is your general opinion of Donald Trump

But we already knew that. We still don't know what you think about this question:

    2. Do you support the idea of holding a parade to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the US Army?

The 2nd question is the actual subject of the thread

^What do you think could have been done differently so that it would not have been hijacked by Trump?

^Well the dates do coincide, so the anniversary celebrations would have to be held on a day other than the anniversary, which would probably not go down too well with people who do like to see the anniversary celebrated.

They should have told the Orange child they don't do 250th anniversaries, they do 255th anniversaries

True that but Trump obviously is ignorant of the fact as he is about nearly anything.
I bet doing that salute was painfull on those bone spurs for the fucking coward.

    A hard Fuck No

First of all, there’s no precedent for it. We’ve never had a parade to celebrate the army’s birthday, why the fuck would we have one now? Secondly, if this administration is so concerned about waste, fraud, and abuse, why spend $45 million on a parade?

It’s obvious to anyone outside MAGAsphere, that this was just tacky, ego-stroking, for Brigadier Bone Spurs.

It’s quite ironic, and incredibly audacious, that a draft dodging douchebag would use the United States military to throw himself a birthday party, at taxpayers expense.

From the US Dept of Defense...customs and courtesies :

Enlisted personnel salute all officers, and officers salute their seniors. Salutes are returned by persons saluted except when they are uncovered—the person saluted should acknowledge the salute with an appropriate greeting or a nod of the head.

(uncovered in US military speak means not wearing headgear)

    And also:
Personnel in civilian clothes render the salute in two ways: 1. Hat in front of the left shoulder (men only) 2. Right handover the heart (men without hats; women with or without hats)

So as C.i.C. he should return a salute, but as he was in civvies with no hat then #2 above should apply. And of course in Australian or british armies, you don't salute in civvies at all.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Trump acknowledging with a salute. Reagan did the same, although I can't think of any other President doing so.

Most all Presidents salute. Considered proper to do so given Prez is Commander n Chief of the armed forces.

Has he got bone spurs in his thumb? It is hanging down, is not in line with the other fingers.

    Pretty sloppy innit.
When I was whizzing around the rivers of Vietnam on a PBR this coward along with thousands of others dodged the draft so I have a personal dislike for the prick.
For those with interest in ancient history here is a bit on the PBR.

^This beautiful model has been going a-begging for a couple of months, but at $350 it is out of my price range.

US Army 250th Birthday Military Parade-1-jpg

It even has the Lance Johnson surf board from Apolcalypse Now

US Army 250th Birthday Military Parade-2-jpg

Did you ever see a surf board on a PBR?

I did not think Vietnam had surf beaches since it does not face any ocean to get the big swell

^That question about the surf board was for Norton. I was curious to know if the US soldiers in Vietnam really did surf or if this is a morsel of movie mythology.

We did. Beaches at Da Nang are excellent for surfing. We also did plenty of water sking behind the PBR. 50 km/h made for good sking.

Clarification - The aircraft being identified as P-47s, are actually "North American P-51 Mustangs." - Quite a different animal and it was a real fighter aircraft of WW II and Korea!

Seems the US should be more worried about the Red Hats than they were about the Redcoats.
