Same same but different mendy. I have respect for REAL teachers. Teflers I find to be chancers and I don't think they have any business teaching kids with my hard earned. Like you I think I've been exceptionally lucky to have entered the oil industry initially.followed by mining/Exploration at the age of 16.it was a steep learning curve. I'm pretty much done with that lifestyle now but no regrets that jobs taken me all over the world. Lucky at that time there was no grammer checks. They just gave you a shot at it.

Oh. And happy geologist day. Without geologists I wouldn't of had a job from the get go.

^ Thank you, and you are very welcome.

Without Mr Walmsley, my geology teacher from the 3rd year at comp, I would never have become a geologist... or probably experienced living in Isaan...

There's good and bad in all industries as you know, as with this 'TEFL' thing everyone mentions, I'm sure there's chancers and I'm sure there's many very able teachers who are just looking at starting out in their careers with a bonus of living somewhere nice.

No label suits all... you should see some of the idiots who turn up offshore.

Nothing wrong with TEFLing, but international school gigs are going to give you a better lifestyle. Solid education for dependents, progressive curriculums (just choose wisely), decent enough pay and bennies like housing and healthcare. A decent school is also going to invest in you as a teacher with PD opportunities. Honestly, I can't be bothered to work late into the evenings. I'm not gonna clock out at 9pm at some cram school 555 . Sounds miserable for the kids and teacher- also educationally the value of it is sketchy imo.

I worked as a cook's helper with the crew that made that song famous. I'm surprised you know it, but you've been around.

Also better if you value your weekends, and simply having your own one classroom makes prep. so much easier.

But, of course, not everyone is set on teaching kids.

Are you still thinking of returning to UB?

I'm.surprised that you are surprised. Monty pythonesque humour is enjoyed by Australians hugely. Didn't think it was a thing in the states? Just a bit of harmless pisstaking really. Unlike what Donald is upto at the moment.

I had a girlfriend once upon a time that insisted I watch Monty Python and Red Dwarf...as I remember both were on PBS. A group of us would dress up at halloween as the Knights of the Round Table (costumes done up by said gf) and do the bar costume contest thing, coconut shells included. Twas a ton of fun. She passed away last week.

I somehow missed this last week.

In all my years as a TEFL chancer pretending to be a proper teacher, all these things were a given.

I've never worked for a school that didn't pay well for the privilege of employing me and paying for the privilege of getting me there to actually employ me!

Surely healthcare is a must wherever you work too? I've never signed a contract without it.

Obviously, an internatiional school gig pays more if you are at a proper international school like Willy, but then you are working with kids every day...

When I first started as a TEFL chancer, we had a session on using film in the classroom. My boss led it (PGCE qualified in the UK) and the general message - as we know - was to exploit a short clip of no more than 5 minutes.

A week later I walked past his classroom and saw him playing Mr Bean for the whole of his lesson, rocked back on his chair with a can of coke (this was at one of the top schools in Bangkok, btw).
