Have you ever been to the US?

    I have.

    Numerous times.

Florida and the East Coast (New York and Boston).

Texas for most of my time though (I have family in Dallas).

    So, all the good places

The people are brilliantly friendly. I love the place.

Do you think there is anything left of the "special relationship" though?

Question for both Brits and yanks.

I can literally see it when I look out my window, and cross the border once or twice a week to play golf when the weather is good. My father lives in the States too, and have been many times to visit him.
They are some of the friendliest in the world, regardless of their personal political views. They can be quite naive and ignorant to the goings on outside their borders though. Not necessarily as bad as some other countries, but with much more consequences to the rest of the world.

Who cares! Most Canadians dislike America and are boycotting all things made in the USA atm. I realize don't hate the people hate the government, but... we even booed them at one of the recent hockey games.

Why have the Canadian avatar, Hal?

To answer your question, yes lived and worked there twice. And visited many times.

Well they should, and I think many Americans like myself who despise the orange moron and never voted for him understand why you would boycot. We want you to put a hurt on this administration to turn the people against it.

I am pissed enough about what is happening that I was actually rooting for Canada to beat the USA in those hockey games.

Getting a bit off track here. I have been to US several times, always work associated, and regularly work remotely with US teams. Individually, I agree. Most Americans are gregariousand welcoming.

The Americans I work with are, without exception, extremely intelligent and driven.

Unfortunately many, many American are downright stupid, ignorant and blinkered. Sadly they provide currently sufficient weight to direct the next few years. America is in for years of real pain. The chickens will shortly coming home to roost.

    Chlorinated ones?

I have been quite a few time and worked there. They have a much less pssimistict outlook on like and most things than us Brits do, anoyingly so sometimes I general i've liked most i have met or worked with.

Yes that is actually quite true and something that even Brits who have been here do not fully understand. US states and the people who reside in them are very much different from each other. For example, someone who lives on the west coast will have almost nothing in common with someone who lives in a southern state. Many of those places down south are hellholes, and they are the poorest, they have the highest obesity levels and are the most bigoted parts of the US. Highest level of support for the cheeto in chief as well.

    been twice

San Fran: despite looking pretty, its fucked. so many homeless, smackheads, and mentally ill people. stayed off union square on powell street and saw a MAGA flag waver, and Almight Lating Kings Gang member. Spent mos of the time in Palo Alto for work.
My conclusion dont be poor or black, and live in palo Alto if possible.

Denver: very nice. Same s above except homeless or hispannic.

Overall liked the states, and can be quite spectacular espeacially up in the rockies.

    Abroad: generally nice people.

I've visited the USA, work related, but not since 9/11. That's over 20 years ago, so no idea how it has changed.

As pointed out, there's a big difference between the states. When I was in the Southern States (Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina) the knowledge and attitude of people was a lot different to when I was in California. The only Central state I visited was Minnesota, when I worked in Minneapolis for a while. That was different again with a large Asian population where I was residing.

The first time I visited the USA, I hated it, I grew to love it on subsequent visits, once I realised that they were foreigners speaking a common language.

I don't want to interrupt this fine thread, but that was absolutely perfect Snubs.

At work I always have to keep my Spellcheck to English (UK) because English (American) is too basic and the spelling's all wrong.

But your phrase there was absolutely perfect for English (UK) and could have been used in any Somerset country pub with complete acceptance.

Is that American vernacular, or is your use of proper insulting language what you have picked up from the Brits on TeakDoor?

I think generally, many Americans live in much tighter information bubbles than their European counterparts.

Plus Christian fundamentalism has a massive dumbing down effect on the American population.

^ But since 2024 all States have been allowed to teach evolution in schools.

    There is hope.

Under Trump and a compliant SCOTUS, they will get around to changing that. Sadly.

I worry that once its widely known the earth isn't flat finding quieter corners of the earth will be impossible, its the one redeeming thing with Trump, hopefully he'll delay this.

The states is probably one of the most interesting and welcoming countries I've ever travelled to. Spent 6 months there but that was about 30.years ago. Fantastic people. Yes some are a bit insular and naive ?.most of my American mates are all ex military and have seen the world. Done there 20 years and retired on a pretty decent pension.
Most people are Kunts.dont believe me? Next time you see a group of people. Shout out OI KUNT watch em all turn around.

I wouldn't necessarily say the division is between Red States and Blue States, it's much more between rural and urban. Red States are just more rural. Where I cross into Washington state it is mostly rural and there are plenty of Trump flags and MAGA hats and bumper stickers, even though it's a Blue state. Even in California, Trump got nearly 40% of the vote.

    You should chill out.

I've never been to the US but probably consumed more visual media from the US than from my own country.
