I'll kick this thread off with an interesting article about real ale ties across the pond...

Even in UK, the campaign for real ale, CAMRA is a minority sport/hobby. When you put micro breweries in Asia up against alcohol giants with a national monopoly, it is pointless.

I discussed this with a Brit brewer in Thailand, who invested huge funds in buying the materiel necessary.to function, even as a microbrewery. His product costs were higher, and as soon as his project became successful, the big players closed him down.

All his dreams and investment, washed away overnight. No room for such entrepreneurship in Asia. It’s a closed shop.
I use a local Belgian microbrewery and it’s quite drinkable, including a stout and cider both on draft. Prices have just gone up by 25p a pint. I expect to pay extra and I don’t drink much these days anyway, but I am surprised local pubs have put up with it for over a year.

Given a choice of decent draft ale, even Belgian derived, versus the bottled gas and chemicals produced regionally, I know which one I prefer. It won’t be long now until it is closed down for tax reasons.

I had two mates who bought surplus cider off the big breweries, bottled/canned it themselves, won "Best Label" awards across Europe and made a pretty packet out of it.
