    Christmas

I was planning on doing it at home this year, but now I'm half thinking of SE Asia again, which is what we did last year with her half of the family, instead of the original plan to go back next summer for a month.

The problem is, it's just not the same in the tropics, is it?

Or am I still pining for things from my childhood (Christmases at home) that I know are long gone and I need to grow up?

(I remember we touched on this in another thread, but I thought it might be worth one of its own to gather different perspectives)

    Yes

If you haven't got kids, then do as you please.

I could do with some sun in December

We’ve all seen the shadow and dead bird photo.

When you visit SE Asia do small children hide in your shadow to get out of the sun?

On Christmas Eve did you sneak out and eat all the cookies your parents left for Santa?

I could have done with some sun for the last 6 months!

I've tried the piss ups on the beach, the Christmas meals, the parties at people's flats, but it just isn't the same when its 34c and people are in shorts and t shirts.

I reckon Mendy's would be a decent Christmas Day do though.

    It's one day !

The amount of expense and preparation for 12 hours I'd rather spend that effort and money on a beach holiday in a Muslim country for a change.

One of my most memorable Christmas Days was raving on Bondi Beach 1998.

At the end of the day it's all about the kids until they grow up which is pretty quick nowadays.

Christmas is a western tradition and is most appropriate in the winter.

Yes and no. No chestnuts roasting on an open fire but the being with family and friends same, same no matter where you are.

There's Xmas week in AoNZ where you can spend a damp week in a tent as unseasonably wet and windy weather sets in. You can play cards and and be filled with anxiety as your adolescent and others are out creating mischief and mayhem. Kinda the same as a UK summer holiday so I'm told.
    pues, estamos aqui

FFS Hal. It’s August and you are talking up Christmas already? It als gives Spamdreth the idea about starting a Thanksgiving thread! (what else have they got to think about, apart from pointless sporting pretense)?

    Grow up Hal.

Unless you're a kid, or have a kid, Christmas is about getting pissed down the pub on the 24th, getting pissed at home on the 25th, perhaps being forced to visit cousins/aunts/uncles etc where you get to explain why you live in Thailand (the temples and food), then getting pissed and watching football down the pub all day on the 26th.

Cut out the 25th activities and do the rest on a Thai island.

As usual, BLD is right on the money.

Yup, we have a long Christmas season - it starts in September. Malls start blasting Christmas songs by Sept 1st. They must be dusting up their xmas decor by now. Mariah Carey & Jose-Mari Chan (a local singer) are very popular during the -ber months.

If you fancy some beach time in PH, there are many beaches: white sand, cream, grey, black, even pink sand! Just take note that Filipinos travel to the provinces during Christmas/ New Year, so the airports, sea ports & highways will be a tad busier. (PH is the only Christian nation in the ASEAN - East Timor isn't part of ASEAN yet - and we do Christmas big time.)

Seems I haven't updated my personal Crissy Countdown board (actually a kid's gymnastics mattress still wrapped in plastic.) in 2 days.

I'd say that there are probably 117 days to go to Christmas, and hopefully Santa will bring August a 't'.

When I was in my early 20's, I'd get $50 cash from my grandma for Christmas every year. And that 50 dollar bill would always go to a hooker. The rest from the atm of course. Back in Vancover for Christmas so why not.

Lol. You're in Cebu, right? (heh) If ever you're in Luzon, send a message. I can take you for a hike on that mountain which has lots of leeches and rock scrambling. For sure it will knock your socks off - because you'll be busy detaching the leeches!

That's assuming that your health is OK and you'll not collapse on me/ my group. Get an MRI/ ultrasound/ bloodwork done first.

This will be my 16th consecutive Christmas in Phuket, and zero 'traditional' occasion, with not a tree, decoration or cards on display in our house. Christmas lunch has always been a seafood fest at the same restaurant, always with some visiting and/or local friends except during Covid. I've remembered a video I took two years ago at the restaurant on Christmas day. There were still Covid restrictions happening, so M'Sahib and I were on our own. For whatever reason, the restaurant had some entertainment which was actually quite pleasant. As I'm barred from Youtube (posted a humourous but inappropriate video to my account years ago - no sense of humour those folk), I got M'Sahib to post it. Turn 'sound' on (pretty sure the singer is Filipina):

Yeah, but those activities always feel better in the cold.

First world problems, eh? Complaining that Christmas on Koh Chang just isn't the same.

We have a fake tree that we use to go the full sabang, but this year it has already been announced by Her Royal Highness that one of the palm trees in the living room will be the Christmas tree.

I strongly suspect that this was a tactic to place the Christmas wish-list, giving Santa plenty of time to acquire the required items.

    Started out with one.

Which had grown to two within a day.

Given that it's August, one suspects additional palm trees might be required before December arrives, especially once I start adding mine.
