Global Warming - I Was Wrong

I watched a show on TV last night about how the Earth formed & life began. There was quite a bit of speculation in the program, but that is to be expected, bearing in mind the content.

It was an okay show. Nothing special. They started talking about Global Warming & being mindful that it is all a scam, I listened to what the presenter had to say.

Turns out, a few hundred million years ago, the whole planet was like a giant snowball. Everything was covered in ice & snow. This reflected the heat back towards the Sun, so there was no way for the planet to warm itself up. Cutting a long story short, volcanos erupting co2 into the atmosphere caused the planet to heat up & life, as we know it today, flourishes.

The planet went from -50 to +50 in just a couple of hundred years (the most extreme climate change this planet has ever known) & all the ice melted into the oceans. On the back of this, life has since gone on to dominate the sea, land & sky, in millions of different forms.

So, while I am prepared to admit that co2 in the air is responsible for warming up the planet, a few degrees temperature difference here & there has absolutely no bad effects whatsever & people should stop going on about it like it does.

If the air wasn't full of co2, that's when we should start to panic.

I was wrong - but also right.

Anyone who can believe that all the pollution we pump into the atmosphere & oceans will not harm our delicate environment, is naive in the extreme.

I dare you to walk through some of China's inner cities in winter, under temperature inversion conditions - let alone live there for extended periods of time.

Co2 is good for the environment. If we didn't have it, we'd be as cold as Mars. Too much & we'd be as hot as Venus, but it's never going to reach those kind of levels because of a few cars & stuff.

Plankton, as they die, take all the surplus co2 to the bottom of the ocean & plate movements eventually splurts it out of a volcano. It's like a giant central heating system.

If it gets too hot it automatically cools down.

Nothing mankind does will make any difference.

^^ Agree, sorry SO, but global warming does have a lot to do with us. I've read both arguments & I still think we are to blame for a lot of it. Even if we aren't, would it really hurt us to cut back on our consumption a little? Help the planet one way or another?

It doesn't. It's all to do with the amount of co2 being pumped by volcanos. Mount Etna & her pals are keeping this planet's environment together & all they do is spout co2, all day long. I'm all for cutting back, but not for the reasons I have been told. It seems to me that 'cutting back' on something translates to 'pay more' for it.

If there was no co2, we would all freeze to death.

Having watched this documentary, I am now an 'expert' on climate change, just like Ant.

Global warming happens without mankind interfering.

Changing the subject, did you see the new study from HK claiming that periods of global cooling coincide with times of massive warfare?

I did see one that showed that the Roman Empire started out at the beginning of a warm period and thrived with all the extra crops and food production that came about, and then when the climate changed all the Barbarians up north started frezzing their arses off so they moved south and sacked Rome.

    I didn't.

If you look hard enough, you can connect global warming statistics with anything you like. If you can't find a connection, just make one up (add a made-up graph for added effect).

Gore does it all the time.

Gore's presentation is fine & very compelling. You really need to take a step upwards & obtain a bird's-eye view to understand the holistic picture.

Cartoons of polar bears drowning because they can't find ice is not compelling.

    It is sentimental mush.

we are speeding up the process
There have been four billion years of climate change going on & we are speeding it up in the space of fifty?

    Not a chance.

That's a pretty fatuous comparison to be drawing.

Weather you agree with it or not Gore's work is based on interpretation of scientific data. You don't even have to agree with the interpretations and conclusions made but the one thing you can't dispute is the data itself.

Therefore a comparison such as you've made above is pointless. If you're going to dispute it do it on the same basis - scientific data - otherwise it's completely meaningless. Even worse, it's unhelpful.

If you look at the climatic changes over the last hundreds of million years that we can actually check, you can see many hot and cold periods, it is normal.

Whether or not we are speeding up the process is only material if you are worried about man surviving as a species. The geological record shows many species coming into ascendancy then dying out, why should we be any different?

Personally, I am only worried about pollution that affects our health directly; some CO2 emissions can do that and should be curtailed, others do not.
    I have reported your post

Mankind is pumping 150 times more CO2 into the atmosphere than volcanoes are, presently. I'd say there is a good chance we are driving the next hot spell.

Perhaps add: natural Earth warming that is cyclical, and the human-made carbon emissions and other factors,

And maybe human are causing the current rise in temperatures.

    Maybe.

    Maybe not.

Until it's proven, one way or another, I'll concern myself with preventing animal suffering & other, more worthy causes.

Myths & legends shouldn't come into it.

My mate David Bellamy who lives just down the road thinks global warming is utter tosh.

He's presenting his opinions in the local schools.

The bloke is so intelligent, he comes across as being as mad as a hatter.

    Excellent video.

Shows the figures these people use are totally fabricated.
