    Most respected occupations

    A New Zealand internet survey polled 12,000 members on the three occupations they respected most and three they respected least.

    Least respected:
    * Politician
    * Lawyer
    * Real estate agent
    * MP
    * Journalist
    * Advertising executive
    * Car dealer
    * Company director
    * Accountant

    Most respected:
    * Doctors
    * Nurse
    * Teacher
    * Firefighter
    * Ambulance driver
    * Soldier
    * Scientist
    * Police officer
    * Caregiver

    Traffic wardens, bar staff, waitresses, call centre staff, cleaners and roadsweepers were neither loathed or loved.

    In a New Zealand survey, The National Business Review found that prostitutes had the worst job but commanded more respect than politicians.

    I'd rather not debate the validity of the poll on this thread, assume it's solid.

    What are your top six (three good, three poor)?

    Interesting. Of the ones they respected, the only one making any dosh is the doctor. I guess they respect poor people the most.

    I can't remember the circumstances of it but I've seen/discussed this previously. What I can remember however was that the poll and survey findings checked out as legit - or at least as legit as these things can be.

    Given the number of lawyers who now trade as jurnos, that surprises me.

    Also, I think you'll find the "in" term is "in-house counsel"

    Well ive worked in two of the "respected" professions, and found it not to be the case. Ive been spat at, bricked, fireworks aimed at me, burning cars aimed at me, not to mention the verbal abuse i incur on a regular basis. Oh yea, and despised by politicians unless it serves them to like us.

    No i have never been a copper either.

    Most respected?

    Anyone who gives a shit about the service they provide

    Least respected?

    Dont get me started

    My profession's not on either list. I hate lists anyway. If I forget to buy potatoes, I get some from my neighbour, and vice versa.

    Strange, we do Newzealanders have such a low esteem of accountants? We are such nice folks, aren't we?

    Maybe when i was younger i respected many professions, now i don't understand why anyone should expect or demand respect from another regardless of what they do.

    I'm with astasinim. Been in the supposed 'most respected' professions virtually all my life & it hasn't made me feel all that respected... And whoever said that the most respected professions were the poorest ones in terms of financial recompense was spot on, too. Respect is vastly overrated, IMO
